EDIT:
so I installed Ubuntu on a base model 2014 mac mini. I installed and ran Unigine benchmark on my 2013 MacBook Pro running OSX Sierra with and without the eGPU using latest Nvidia drivers. My baseline was a mac mini running Ubuntu with eGPU and latest Nvidia drivers. All tests run on the same dell U2515h display panel. The test was run at 2560 x 1440px. For reference I am using an Akitio Node Pro and a watercooled Geoforce GTX 1080Ti.
Results:
2013 Macbook pro OSX (2.5Ghz i5, 8Gb RAM, Intel Iris 1.5Gb GPU): 10.8 frames per second, score: 273
2013 Macbook pro OSX (2.5Ghz i5, 8Gb RAM, 1080Ti 11Gb eGPU over TB2): 94.7 frames per second, score: 2386
2014 Mac mini Ubuntu (1.4 Ghz i5 4Gb, 1080Ti 11Gb eGPU over TB2): 94 frames per second, score: 2366Conclusion:
Nvidia drivers on OSX perform well under these test conditionsI plan to stick with Ubuntu on the Mac mini as a dedicated data wrangling rig, but not for performance reasons as there is little eGPU performance difference between Ubuntu and OSX.
I will do and I'm expecting huge results. The thing is I really don't want to use W10, I'd much rather figure out why OSX isn't playing nicely. I suspect it's the TB2 connection - remind me your setup?
