  • I have pondered this and it makes sense as the unsheathed cable obviously cannot experience any friction (ignoring mud, water, air). But in my experience and I think for most home mechanics, unless you have files and very nice, very sharp cable cutters or a Dremel the cable/ferrule/stop interface is the bit that generates the most friction. So adding two dodgy cable ends is probably worse.

You can tell when you start adjusting down the length of the cable, the last few cuts (where you're cutting close to the end already, and thus get more deformation, fraying, etc.) tend to make the friction worse

  • And a straight bit of good quality outer has pretty much negligible friction - it's where it bends the friction happens. So assuming you are adding just a straight run of outer, the additional friction is not really going to be noticeable.

  • You ran a full cable housing on your CAADX before moving to hydraulic didn’t you?

To be fair, Cannondale doesn’t use compressionless housing at the time, and for some reason not build very well (lots of friction on brakes).

A full compressionless cable housing make a big difference in braking performance, Ive just finished a bike build from scratch where the rear TRP Spyre felt exactly like the front, nice and sharp.

  • You ran a full cable housing on your CAADX before moving to hydraulic didn’t you?

Yeah, it was terrible, which is why I went hydro

  • Can understand exactly, it's fustrating as they're great frames, let down by poor choice of housing/setting up.

Selling my Niner RLT9 if anyone here is interested.

  • Liking the new Easton crankset;

    47/32, 46/32 and 46/30.

  • Pretty excited to take delivery of this thing tomorrow

  • I get all this friction/compression less cabling, I was more concerned with damaging the carbon frame with the force of pulling the cable on the frame stops but as I am going to use a full length outer this is now a moot point.

As a side note the rear BB7 on my Croix de Fer pulls almost better than the front with full length Lifeline linear cabling.

  • Not sure if anyone has responded... I love mine. I've mainly been on road/audax with it. Loving the bigger tyres, spyre brakes and 1x. Just about to go 650b. The bike is a forum cliche!

  • I bought an alloy road frame from ridewill - quick delivery, cheap as chips, rough as fuck welds, but solid, raw alu finish, but ridden it over the winter not a problem. Would recommend for the price. Was oddly cheaper buying through there amazon shop than eBay

  • This thread TL:dr.
Having not had a road bike for years and realising how tractor-like(but awesome) my lht is when riding with others it’s clear I need an on-trend groady thing.
Will be my only road bike and will only do lighter off road duties as I’ve got the lht for touring anyway.
I’m a massive surly fanboy so looking at their pacer replacement but realistically I can’t afford it.

So, need room for slightly knobbly tyres with mudguard clearance, geo to suit my 5’10 t-rex figure and take a small front carrier while being nippy like a road bike. Cheaper the better or ideally frameset.
Not fussed about wheel size or brake type.
    Akrose?

  • while being nippy like a road bike

    Akrose?

Arkose has a really long wheelbase, ain't nippy. They're more of a dull plodder.

  • Don’t know how you’d come to this conclusion. Mines got a long stem and big tyres on and it’s hella nippy. Just asking to be chucked around. Nothing plodder about it

  • My track bike is nippy, my Colnago C40 is nippy, a good 26" MTB is nippy, my Ritchey P29er, is great, but ain't nippy, my Arkose is mass-produced aluminium with a 1045mm wheelbase, it ain't nippy. I suspect something like this Cielo would be relatively nippy.

  • I have to concur with you, although with a short stem it felt quicker.

It came alive the faster you go, but definitely a plodder at low speed like 5mph, which is idea off road.

  • Haha what waffle. How does production size have anything to handling?
I’d take anything somebody who talks about the ride qualities of their Colnago, with a pinch of salt anyway.

  • Just measured mine. It’s 1035mm. That’s pretty good for a frame that will comfortably take 700x45c tyres if you ask me

  • Can you not realise that a bike with a long wheelbase, even for its type, and big wheels/tyres won't have nippy handling?

What's wrong with the ride quality of a C40, a bike that won Paris-Roubaix five times?

  • Can you not realise

    Oh please

  • Did anyone use the adjective 'chuckable' yet?

    Wait, wrong thread....

  • I’d take anything somebody who talks about the ride qualities of their Colnago, with a pinch of salt anyway.

  • This is some peak forum shit
