Also what exactly is the flexible superglue people have mentioned around here? I’ve asked in a few hardware shops (I know, actual shops, I’m a relic from another age) but recieved blank slackjawed stares.

You can get a version of Loc-Tite from Wilcos that contains rubber, which supposedly makes it more suitable for gluing up holes, but IME it doesn't hold, though I might have been quite hasty in waiting for it to dry.

Any rubber toughened cyanoacrylate adhesive. Examples are Loctite 480, Sureloc RT80, CTA 1135, Permabond 737, Powerbond RT300B etc.
