Fixed gear kind of mountain bike

  • Hi, while scrolling through the photos of the beater's topic, I fell in love with this bike. I have always to build myself a double disk fixed gear bike, then it became more of a singlespeed mountain bike but this is exactly the spirit of what I want. The main thing is I need it to be as cheap as possible.

The thing is I have no idea where to start:

    • Do I build it out of FGFS frame as it has horizontal dropouts, and as it can receive wide tires and a BMX crankset?
    • Do I build it out of a track frame with MTB forks but that means finding a recent frame that can receive 1"1/8 forks to get a beefy look and a BMX crankset but that can't get wide tires?
    • Do I build it out of an old MTB frame which means both welding and finding horizontal dropouts?

I really know what I want and don't want to make compromise! I need it to be ratty, have a BMX crankset, 1"1/8 forks, compact geometry, 26" fixed wheels with wide tires. I just have no idea what my best chance is concerning the frame I start with.

Thanks for your time and help.

    Simon

  • I'd be on the hunt for an on one inbred. full bikes on ebay for much cheapness.

I rode my 29er scandal (basically an alu inbred) fixed for a couple of winters it was great.

  • I have a pfix frameset I want rid of, takes 26x2.3 and is mid b for bmx.

  • This frame wouldn’t do the job as it has vertical dropouts. Also the geometry doesn’t look compact.

  • The B.B. on this looks pretty high. I really don’t know if this could work for my project

  • The B.B. on this looks pretty high.

Isn't that exactly what you need on a fixed mountain bike?

  • All City Dropout or Defwish, ran my Dropout as a single speed MTB for about a year, great fun with 700x42

  • Don't mean to crash your project, but I have a DMR that fits your description. What size do you ride? Shoot me a PM if interested and gl with your build!

  • There was a 26" horizontal dropout, disc braked Inbred frame. Long top tube and 135mm rear spacing may not work for you.

Mines now got a Genesis CdF fork and 27.5 wheels with gravel kings for pottering about.

  • I would like it to be cheap if possible and this is very very expensive. Thanks for the input though.

  • Of course! But this looks too high.

  • Damn it this is exactly what I need! But these seem to be difficult to find in France

  • It hasn’t got horizontal dropouts unfortunately.

  • Thanks for the offer but that doesn’t look like what I want to build

  • Charge Scissor? Orange P7?

I wanted a bomb-proof, fat-tyred fixed gear and have ended up with a Surly Steamroller.

  • You keep saying this but you are wrong. The Inbred was and still is available with horizontal dropouts. -

It sounds like you don't want a mountain bike because you want a steep head angle. As a result, a FGFS or Steamroller type thing is your best bet. Tyre clearance will be your main concern.

  • Steamroller type thing is your best bet

    tada,

  • Lovely. Tight at the back?

  • i have no idea... tbh saw your comment on the surly and thought 'oh yea!' then did a google and that one popped up. seems to be the only image of it on the owner's flickr unfortunately. looks fun! (except for the red bits).

  • That looks fun.

  • Certainly solves any clearance issues the Steamroller has.

  • Thanks for the info. Where can I buy this frame online?

  • That's the kind of frame I would like. But I guess it is expensive, unfortunately...

  • Definitely looks like a great frame! But difficult to find!

EDIT: actually found some but it's quite expensive
