As @Amey mentioned (waves), Schwalbe Pro Ones were total shit for me. Way more punctures than standard Ones, and several punctures that refused to seal so required patching from the inside/tyre worms. Far, far too much faff.
Moved to IRC Formula X-Guard and haven't had a puncture since. Had to bin one because I hadn't noticed that a piece of glass (I'm guessing) had slashed straight through to the puncture proof layer - it went right across the tread - but even then it hadn't punctured or let out any air at all, I just didn't fancy riding it any more. It could have been like that for 100s of miles for all I knew.
Current puncture proof mileage is at around 3000 km on one (which I now have as a spare), and around 1700km on the new pair I bought. Wear rate is impressively low and while the rear has flattened off a bit after 1700km, I weigh 110kg so I'm pretty happy with that – I imagine they'll last a very very long time for lighter riders.
If you don't mind trading a bit of puncture resistance for speed, then the RBCC version dumps the puncture proof layer – I'm looking to get a pair for review, and am keen to see if they're as awesome as the x-guards.

Yeah. I don't think it will make a tyre significantly harder to get on the rim - unless it was bitching in the first place. But it will help when it comes to inflation.
-
• #2130
inflation was more of a problem than getting the tyre on. Two layers.

• #2131
Ok, tyre went on, inflates but air leaks from the tyre bead.
I think maybe I wasn't tidy enough with my rim tape application. This is close to the point where I decide it's easier just to put a tube in.

• #2132
Bead definetly locked in? In my experience you don't need to be that neat with the tape.
-
• #2133
Tape should ideally fit exactly from wall to wall whilst following the contour of the centre channel. If not, err. on having it run up the sides of the rim hook, i.e. too wide is much, much better than too narrow.

4000 miles for race tires - is that not pretty good?
-
• #2135
seems that it's actually the valve stem that's not sealing. Just made a small hole in the tape and pushed it through.
Wind the locking ring some more?

Put some sealant in and ride it - you’ll soon find out if it works
-
• #2137
yes, may be the next move.
part of me was hoping to avoid the fuckin mess after finding out that it doesn't work and having to take the tyre full of sealant off, and start again.

Valve hole/ sealing always seems critical, making sure the valve is correctly seated the rim and a tiny hole in the rim tape.

Probably for race tyres, not so much for commuters. Maybe i’ve Over-spec’d

Thanks very much for your in-depth reply. Your experience with Pro Ones sounds identical to mine, especially with having to resort to patches and worms, which I didn’t mind doing, but it gets a bit tedious after a while. What i’m After is a tyre that doesn’t puncture (as much) in the first place, which the IRC ones sound like.
Thanks for the recommendation, that looks like the best option for now. Looking forward to getting them sorted, and killing the schwalbes with fire.

Schwalbe is dead to me now.

after another couple of hours of messing around and taking skin off my thumbs, I've ended up with the Maxxis on with a tube.
Which is, uh, where I started.

Although I repaired my Pro-1 with a patch on the inside, it had a lump in it which I couldn't get rid of.
I.e. when inflated and spinning the wheel, it was not round; as if the tyre wasn't seated properly at some point. It's going in the bin now.

• #2144
Yeah, I think they deform the more they get taken off and reseated. Mine still run smooth in that respect, though they're prone to air leaks once the pressure drops beneath a certain level.

PS Can you actually buy them in this country, or is it over to Euro-zone I go?
Edit: Just found them at @cycleclinic, though I had to find the site through the review on road.cc as they never came up on Google search results (not on 1st 3 pages anyway). #csb

My experience: Pro Ones have been my Sunday tyre for a few years - very fast, lovely ride, not too durable and ok for punctures BUT I've had two instances on fairly worn rears where they have had punctures that wouldn't seal (stans or vittoria fluid)- have had to put a tube in at the roadside (once with great difficulty as I had done the lockring up too tight). Neither time have i successfully managed to patch the hole once home. No big deal as the tyres were pretty squared off and cut up. Going to try Hutchinson Galaktik next with Orange sealant - £40 for a pair and good reviews.
TL; DR: Pro Ones are nice but not too durable - going to try another flavour

Cheers for the info. IRC have been ordered.

Can anyone tell me why it’s OK for tyres to be essentially single-use? Seems like a good way to sell moar tyres!
-
• #2149
Did anyone's Pro Ones ever self-seal (i.e. with the sealant) or did they all require worming?
-
• #2150
Mine did in the beginning, but glass cuts were just too large for the sealant to cope with.
so should i go for one or two layers of Gorilla?
