A happy ending...

A map we have created that shows every stolen bike reported to the police (London) in 2017. Over 21K records (and that is just the reported bikes).

Cool map. Basically the chances of any comeuppance from stealing a bike is negligible.

B'twin Triban 500 SE stolen on 07/04/2018 between 16:00 and 23:00 on Bancroft Road, E1. Stupid me didn't lock it properly and must have only locked the front wheel. Also had a light and Motion Urban 650 front light attached. Hoping to see if I can get the frame number from decathlon in the morning.
This is the only picture I have of it.
So annoying, I paid £110 for a bike locker and then the uni is doing some construction and the fence blocked me from using the bike locker and then I decided to use a rack and now its stolen.

Yes it's very low, which makes it all the important for the cycling community to help the police.
Please take a look at our new stats page for the Met police. The 'sanction detection' rate for 2017 is standing at 1.7%.

My friend had her bike stolen from a shared hallway in Hackney last week. We found it being advertised on Gumtree on Monday. She contacted the Police and asked for help recovering it but they weren't available to go with her at the arranged meet up time. Here is a picture of the guy that she bought her bike back from.
A happy ending in that she got her bike back.

She paid the guy who stole it to get it back??
-
• #13784
Presumably there's no solid proof it was him that stole it. Adding that to not knowing what his reaction might be to being confronted I guess buy it back and give the police the photo, location, phone number etc.

Not unusual if you don't want to run the risk of just taking it back with old 'test ride' rouse.

Yes. I advised against it but I understand why she thought that this was the safest course of action without Police back up.

I'll pass this advice on to her. I doubt they'll follow it up. She doesn't have proof that he stole it. He just happens to be selling it less than 7 days after it was stolen.

It wasn't really advice it's what I presumed had happened.
I'm pretty sure many here would have just turned up with many friends and taken it back. -

She was considering this. If something went wrong and it got violent and stabby you'd never forgive yourself though. All for a bike. I think that she did the right thing in the circumstances.

She has the distinct impression that that scooter in the background in the photo was back-up.

Looks like it, why else would it be starting straight at you? Even in a photo it looks dodgy.
Whats the gum tree name? regular poster or one off?

I've just got my santa cruz back. I saw the guy riding it yesterday in the same area it was stolen. I saw him again today and followed him with my mate. I had to go with the strong arm method. I blocked the guy who was riding it whilst my friend blocked him from behind. When he saw the two of us with d locks in hand. He had no choice. He told us he bought it off the local kids for £250. But knew he had no excuse because he knew it was stolen. He practically shat himself as he saw we were prepared to f*** him up. Police have been informed I've got my bike back.

Yesterday I had a Brooks B17 saddle and Carradice Nelson Saddle Bag stolen from my bike from near the Strand area. Bastard thing is that the saddle had just broken in :'(
Keeping an eye out on gumtree and ebay but not sure what else to do. -

There's a newish B17 for £50 in what used to be Cash Converters (can't remember it's new name), Chapel Market, Angel. It might not be yours, but I thought you might want to know.
