Thanks for all the replies re printer/brightness.
I was indeed running my MacBook Air screen brightness at near full, and I've dialled it back to half. iPhone wasn't quite as bright as that, but I've also dialled it back to half.
This has helped, and I've bumped up the exposure on photos in Lightroom to compensate.
I've also bought a new printer which seems to print brighter images than the older one.
Solved !
