In other news my knee appears to be alright after all, but I do have a tight IT Band (a.k.a. a "runner's knee" - oh the irony)
Forgot to reply to this--you do know that it's actually a typical cyclist thing to have a tight IT band, don't you?
I had the same problem at about your age. In my case, it turned out the strain on the knee was transferred from a problem with the sacro-iliac (hip) joint. It's worth exploring whether it may be referred pain in your case, as well. I'd also recommend yoga and swimming.
Well no, I didn't :)
So the condition was apparently triggered by new shoes that were too tight and didn't pivot as much as the previous ones on the pedal (spd innit). It may have underlying beforehand mind you.
I may try yoga, now that I have swaths of free time at my disposal.
