IME the only value of a calibrated monitor is if that is mirrored somewhere else (studio with client’s marketing dept, studio with publisher, studio 1 with studio 2 on shared projects etc) and for workflow and general convenience. Quite often it caused more problems than it solved.
Proofs ftw.

We used two kinds of printers with each their own paper stock, so I guess it might have been an experiential brightness value.
And on one of the printers you had to add a subtle layer of magenta and/or blue to all your images to compensate.
All this talk of printing makes me want to buy a proper printer. -

Thanks for all the replies re printer/brightness.
I was indeed running my MacBook Air screen brightness at near full, and I've dialled it back to half. iPhone wasn't quite as bright as that, but I've also dialled it back to half.
This has helped, and I've bumped up the exposure on photos in Lightroom to compensate.I've also bought a new printer which seems to print brighter images than the older one.

Comparing a Lumix gf1 and gh5 online I read this:
"Panasonic GF1 and Panasonic G5 have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture. On the other hand, since Panasonic GF1 has 32% larger pixel area compared to Panasonic G5, it has potential to collect more light on pixel level hence have less noise in low light / High ISO images"
What does it mean for one to have a larger pixel area than the other since they have the same sensor?
-
• #1008
It says they have the same sensor size - m4/3.
Based on the quote, I'd guess that the GF1 has fewer pixels on the same size sensor as the G5, thus the pixels on the GF1 must be larger to cover the same area. -
• #1009
So larger pixels are better? In terms of less noise in low light at least?
-
• #1010
Technically - yes.
But if it was my money, I'd go for the newest model. A lot of high iso performance is determined by the processor built in to the camera. -
• #1011
Thanks. G5 is newer.
Looking to replace waterlogged gf1 body with something 2nd hand around £100.
-
• #1012
Any interest in a like for like replacement? I have a GF1 body sitting in a drawer not getting used
-
• #1013
yes, at least with that there's no fear of trying something new :) PM me a price if you want?

Is the Ricoh GR II the forum approved on-the-go camera? I just sold my Fuji X100T -- great camera but not ideal for quick jump-off bike quick snaps.
Was also thinking about Canon GX9 or GX7...

Got a gr2 the other week, super happy with it
-

X70 is a little bigger but I like the abundance of external controls; the menu subterfuge of the GR drove me nuts.
-
• #1017
I have a GR which you could persuade me to sell...

You should buy my X70!

Have been given an om10 and came with two nice vivitar lenses and thought if you weren't sorted.
Have about 25 films to do....no idea how old they are...wonder if it is worth it.
Fair enough. I think your college was saving energy! Only when specifying stock do you know what tone the paper will be.
I’ve always put the monitor on full brightness and presented visuals (overlay onto a tone appropriate for the stock). Then test prints because (as you point out) only tests really matter.
