    Back to the race itself, I am glad Gilbert struggled with it, I was really surprised to find out it was only his second time racing it and he was gung ho pre-race when asked about his lack of experience saying he's raced a lot of cobbles. I am sure he has but not like P-R's. I think he should have decided he wants to win all five monuments a little earlier in his career. Post race he admitted his lack of experience cost him, that he didn't really appreciate the effects of the pave and that he didn't really know what to do and when, so when he saw the Sunweb rider go in Arenberg he thought hey-ho I may as well go as well. That ain't going to win you the race.

    Its a bit like Wiggins suddenly deciding he wants to win it.

  • Gilbert came 15th, in the same group as Degenkolb. That's not a bad showing, and I certainly think he can win it. Obviously, he does need more experience.
