  • I have 1x11 on my winter bike / tourer / occasional off-roader. 44t with 11-36.

    Occasionally run out of gearing going downhill, and can be a bit tricky sprinting for the town sign at the end of the club run but otherwise all good.

  • Mine's 1×10 with 40T ring and 11-36 cassette. It's too high for loaded bikepacking and too low for club runs, but OK for everything else, as long as you can handle the slightly gappy gears. If you're used to riding fixed then you'll probably be just fine, as you're used to being in the wrong gear all the time anyway.

    That's why I'm thinking of keeping the 48/32 chainset, as the 48t with 11-34 is a perfect 1x10 for road riding, and I got the 32t for off road.

  • Thanks - the fixie thing is part of why I’m thinking 1x could work. How much of a pain is it swapping out the big ring for different kinds of riding? I could envisage running 44 up front but swapping for something smaller to ride loaded, but taking links out is a fiddly ball ache...

  • In theory long as the big sprocket and chainring add up to the same thing, and the cage is long enough, you wouldn't need to change the length of the chain right? You could do something like:

    • 48/11-32
    • 46/11-34
    • 44/11-36
    • 40/11-40
    • 38/11-42
    • 34/11-46 if you're riding up the Alps with full touring gear

    You get the idea, you just need to find two good chainring/cassette pairings.

    Bit of a faff but if you're changing the chainring it's not much harder to change the cassette at the same time.

    Having said all that I have 50/34 + 11-36 on my touring/gravel thing, covers pretty much everything but I end up cruising around cross-chained quite a lot which isn't ideal. Don't think 1× is quite right for touring personally.

  • Get different chains, takes a minute to swap.

  • Adjust with chain quick links and pieces of chain in different lengths.

  • You crosschain like a madman on a 1x anyway

  • This. Technically you only have to use the front derailleur when you change your type of riding.

  • It’s a 20 minute job to swap rings. You could splice in a short length of chain using quick links for the larger ring but, as others have said, having a second chain makes more sense.

  • I can’t fit a front mech to mine, but the 1x setup is adequate for most things for me.

  • I think the obvious solution is just to have. selection of bikes, each set up single speed and a support vehicle following for bike/gear changes.

    Because all modern bikes drop their chains so often.

  • Very comfortable actually. Nice to do long distances on, and very happy when it's loaded. I wish it had a little more tire clearance, but for the riding I do 99% of the time with it it's spot on.

  • If they’re bamboo framed you can burn each one by the side of the groad when you’re done with them.

  • Apologies if a repost, but I really like the look of the steel Rondo Rutt ST. Like the carbon model it can fit either 700 or 650b wheels
