Looks like it could be chilly where he is. Clearly, he just wants to keep his chin warm.
Can't fault him for the beard, as it was (originally) a rational choice made for practical reasons.
in 2013, he became the first person to swim the 900 miles from Land’s End to John o’Groats. [...] Along his amazing journey he swam with seals and dolphins – and grew his now-trademark beard, after being stung repeatedly by jellyfish, to stop their tentacles reaching his face.
I don't think he's doing as much swimming these days, so I guess he doesn't really need it any more, but I don't know
