So after a couple test rides dan wasn’t happy with the front deraileaur action. Essentially the da7700 isn’t really designed for compact rings so BC are now fitting a 52/36 to see if it works better.

A quick look on the gearing calculator suggests that a drop in cadence to 81 from 90 gives the same result. And here they are installed

I know gearing is the primary focus but that 105 chainset looks great. I think it's the frame colour that sets it off. Anyway back to gear calculating.

So alldone and dusted! What an epic ride! A few footnotes.
Gearing was fine, but nobody got up the muur due to fallers in front
All bikes survived and actually were among the fastest on the flat/descent cobble sectors!
The cx had a tubeless setup so psi was dropped to 25psi! It was incredible up the bergs. The other two bikes ran on 55psi
We all rode together until the final 35 km and then went full gas to see who was really the strongest. This route exactly follows the final 35km of the pro race. The CX dropped the road bikes immediately on Kruisberg and the trek got at gap on the rossin on hotond. We all stayed separate over the Kwaremont and Paterberg, but on the 12km smash to the finish, the CX ran out of gears. The trek overtook with 1 km to go, with the CX hanging on to second. And the rossin a couple minutes back. All in all a superb ride.

Hmmmm not bad....

As a stupid reprise, me (trek) and the CX will be riding Waffa HOTN on Sunday. The gravel will be a different challenge at together, and I do no expect my tires to last...
In fact they cannot even withstand Regent’s Park! Aside from schwalbe g-one tires, can anyone recommend some good 30-32 tubeless tires?

Not really useful now, but I have a 7700 FD on an old steel frame (with the hanger probably designed around a 53/39) and run 48/38 on 7400 cranks. With a 28 on the back. Took a fair bit of fettling to get the front derailleur shifting in the big ring nicely but it works. I think hillbilly at Brixton actually cracked it for me...
I guess I might just have got lucky.

He did that to Ho's Look too.

Haha the legendary skid whip endo!
Jim was involved with both our builds :-)

Gravelking?

Yeah good idea but sigma suggests that only the smaller 32 is not tubeless compatible. Also the ‘tan’ sidewalls are brown, which looks hideous to my eyes

Also a picture from the ronde heading up the Paterberg

Nice bouncy chain!

• #44
Very much so! I didn’t have any chain drops (dan did once on the rossin) but I definitely could have done with more spring tension in the rear deraileaur. I might well swap in an r7000 in 6 months, cos they look the shit

Worth looking at the new Ultegra clutch? (Haven’t looked at price or anything)
-
• #46
I concur, the black ones then?
-
• #47
Yeah I thought about a clutch setup for 1x and the Ultegra certainly would have reduced costs as I imagine i could keep the br505 shifters.... which I hate as they look like dildos

Lol the silver r7000 is straight to anti as as far as in concerned. The silvers don’t even seem to be consistent

Will look good with a different crank I'd say
I've successfully run 32 cassettes on Shimano 9 speed. Depending on hanger geometry you might need a longer b screw.
EDIT: Re-read and seen you've done it. ^ for reference.
