thanks @topkek!
little update (soz for slow progress - no excuse really other than i've super busy at weekends over the last couple of months).
been prompted to finish up quickly after my CAAD8 was nicked a couple of weeks ago, and I'm also hoping to ride it to cambridge later this month.
so, this weekend I got brakes set up but hit a bit of a snag when setting up gears - despite all sorts of fiddling with min/max screws the rear derailleur can't click into the top sprocket without interfering with the spokes. my guess is either the derailleur or the dropout hanger is bent. at this point it seems sensible to tap out and drop it off at my LBS.
well chuffed with the way it's coming together despite derailleur woes, fingers crossed there will be an easy-ish fix.
is now an appropriate time to talk about bottle cages / bottles? I'm thinking a couple of these could suit nicely - not sure what suits best in terms cages.

forgot to mention: picked up the stem for a pretty reasonable £13 from planet x in one of their extremely rare sales and the bars are from condor. so the original sweepy bars and their associated stem are available if anyone who might have been making eyes at them is keen.

apologies for the lack of update on this, turns out the derailleur hanger was bent and the shifter needed some declogging beyond my expertise. this was all sorted months ago but it's taken me until now to get some better photos sorted.
I'm still on the lookout for some bottle cages that will go nicely with the greyish metal of the 1055 - any suggestions would be much appreciated...!

Looks great! Re cages, maybe Chinese ti or some raw alu ones if you want matte grey?

I have a pair of plain TA bottle cages which would fit period/look.
Happy for your to have them for free if you pick up with the bike!

Can we see that seat post lug? Really interesting. Is that a dust cap going from round the seat pin to the bolt?

correct! it's one of my favourite details on the frame. will try and do some close up snaps of it when i can get some decent light. underneath the dust cap is a single allen bolt which screws against the seat post, no idea how this is sufficient to stop the seat post slipping but somehow it manages. This photo may help a little for now.

thanks @zootsuit!
little update now I've added some alu cages and reluctantly some mudguards due to all the cack weather lately. feels super comfy to ride, I was worried I'd need a longer stem but all good so far.
Unfortunately the hoods are starting to fall apart with some pretty big splits.... struggling to find some replacements at the moment.
Got some proper road shoes on the way so I can switch the pedals back to the ones that came with the groupset.

Such a cool bike, I've a real soft spot for MBKs as my sisters had them when we were wee.
Nice project! Love the funky colors, and i think the bar tape will look great.
That 105 group is solid, I rode one on my first road bike for two years - which was also an MBK actually, "Chrono" i think it was called in red/blue Columbus Thron tubing with a chrome fork. Over time the STI's original grease may dry out and clock up the shifting mechanism, but spraying in some WD-40 or similar will keep it going again for a year or so before a new treatment is needed, at least that was my experience.
Good luck with the stem and bars, looking forward to seeing the final result.
