Not really useful now, but I have a 7700 FD on an old steel frame (with the hanger probably designed around a 53/39) and run 48/38 on 7400 cranks. With a 28 on the back. Took a fair bit of fettling to get the front derailleur shifting in the big ring nicely but it works. I think hillbilly at Brixton actually cracked it for me...
I guess I might just have got lucky.
