FWIW I was getting really sick of the ads, so I've just swapped over to using chrome rather than the app. If you use android you can hit "make homescreen shortcut" in the options, and it will basically make its own window that is separate from chrome. I think this combined with a VPN seems to have blocked all the ads which is a nice bonus, and is just one less invasive bit of facebook that I have to keep installed
