First ride on the new gazelle yesterday. Bristol to Llandrindod Wells. It's a lovely riding thing.

Fab scenery, thanks for sharing the ride.

That looks like a fantastic day out. Chapeau.

I would pay a fair amount of money to descend the road in that third picture.

Anyone here ever change a freehub on these wheels to take a modern cassette? I've got a set of Zondas with the 8-speed freehub body that they came with and just assumed that was the most gears I'd get on it.
Actually looking closer at the pic I'm not even sure if that is a larger cassette, I just assumed because of the rear mech and cranks.

here's the freehubs campag made over time:
https://branfordbike.com/new-page-1/
you can swap the freehub body to a 9 speed (9 will accept 10 and 11, it's just named 9 because that was the highest tech at the time), but might have to change the axle too. the 8 speed exa looks very similar to the modern spline pattern, but don't be fooled: it will not take more than 8 sprockets. the newer freehub bodies have a different diameter axle, so you can only do the conversion with a 9 speed piece (usually they have "9 speed" written on them). they came on lower level hubs, so be on the lookout for a veloce hub from ~2000 and swap all the internals over

A 2 mm spacer on the oln solves the axle length issue .

Ah nice one. Yeah I knew about the exa drive not taking more than an 8-speed cassette but that's pretty much where my knowledge stopped. Good to know if I decide to fit a modern group at some point, I do really like these wheels.

I'm thinking of going A-head on this build. What's the best / lightest ahead adaptor, and is there a high quality, lightweight stem with a 26mm bar clamp, or will I have to change my bars as well? I want a 110mm.
-
• #991
Leave it, the quill is better....
But, I've run both an old ritchey complite and a Thomson as 1" ahead with 26mm clamp.
-
• #992
Yeah, keep the Deda. I think they are a great stem for a neo retro build. A sort of compromise between old and new.
-
• #993
Velo Orange do a nice -17 degree silver 26mm clamp ahead stem for not much money.

Reasons for A-head: More slammable. Position is quite upright at the moment, which is nice and comfy. However the thing is built to be my 'fast' bike. I don't want to cut the steerer.
I'd also like to save a little weight. This might get some brand new DA C24s in the summer, I could take it down to around 7.6 kilos.

Nitto then? UI-85/86 are 26mm if i remebmber rightly, plus they do a good adaptor.
-
• #996
You could start by getting rid of the headset spacers? Or does the quill bottom-out in the fork steerer?
-
• #997
Spacer is there as there is some excess steerer length. I don't want to cut the steerer down as long term it means the frame is more versatile.
-
• #998
Will look at Nitto, thanks. I'm not allowed to spend any more money on it until June :)
-
• #999
Dya mean headtube or steerer tube?

Also, if the steerer is long enough get a low stack height 1" aheadset. Slamnit and problem solved.
Good job .black crank would look better
