  • What is that mini valve amp pls?

  • Pro-Ject Tube Box II. Not sure I'd actually recommend it over a good solid state phono pre, but I got it very cheaply. Was a complete ballache to find a reasonably priced power supply and the valves don't glow, which is a little disappointing, but it does its job and doesn't noticeably colour the sound (or if it does, it's pleasing enough).

    Looks cool as tho

  • It does beg the question, what did he replace it with? :)

  • Halide

  • I agree with airhead. if your rega is set up well, the cart would be the thing to change without spamking big money.

Makes interesting cabinets, has recommendations on the BT audio boards you can use, also talks about different cabinet layouts (closed, ported, reflex) and how to choose.

  • Anyone else tried Roon? It kept appearing on the horizon when I was looking at Sooloos systems and I decided to try it for 2 weeks. Fair warning it's very good so a trial is probably going to lead to wanting it.

Basically improves on iTunes in every respect, if you have a large collection and want bit perfect output it makes it all happen with ease.

  • I've used JRMC for many years; from what I can see of Roon, it's like JRMC on steriods for more cash.

Roon does look nice but not enough for me to shell out $500...

  • I'm not sure it will stay ahead of the competition for 4 years either, which is basically what it takes to justify the lifetime membership.

I'm probably going to keep going with the membership for a while and weigh it up though as it does so many things the household has needed for a long time and easily too. Plus I can move the licence between households and libraries when I need to. It's incredible how all the little details add up to such a nice piece of software, like iTunes could easily be this software but can't be bothered.

  • Anyone interested in a Rega Planar 1 ? Very low mileage, still under warranty. Until July next year.
Also have a Pro-ject Phono MM Pre to go with it. I'm moving country and we're trying to declutter everything gradually and put cash to one side. It's one of the things I will sell and re-buy rather than transporting it across the Atlantic.

  • How much ya talking?

  • PMd ya

Sorry I missed your reply. That is a super helpful channel for what I'm after. Cheers!

  • Was there ever a walkman made with recording function and ability to run off a dc cable?

  • Yeah, they were their Professional line and were used a lot by radio stations for OB stuff.

  • The WM-D6C is the one.

  • Picking my 3020 up today after I heard a crackle on my current Amps phono stage on one channel and had a melt down...

  • who was after a cheap phono stage? there's a firebottle ss stage on one of the hifi nerd fora for £120... bargain and the guy that makes them is a boss.

  • Hooray!

Well, hooray for new things, anyway

  • Cool, thanks, bit spendy though. I thought cassette tapes was officially dead.
I’m after something that my 8yo son can handle, a physical media rather that streaming, compact and with ability to record the music he likes that is not released on vinyl.

  • Would minidisc be too digital? The early walkman style MD's are silly money for the quality they deliver. Let's face it, they're going to be hipster flavour of the month sooner or later!

  • +1 for minidisc

I think most Sharp players had a DC cable. A lot also had an AA option, whereas most Sony had an add-on battery pack which is a bit more clunky.

At 8yo he'll be careful enough not to break the small portable players. Also the discs are robust and don't degrade like tape - I'd be wary of even buying cassettes now unless you were 100% confident of the source.

  • Good idea.
I guess it would come down to the recording procedure. I’d like to be able to record real time from, say youtube as well as a microphone.
I never had minidisc so I don’t know how they operate.
He’s careful enough to put on records in the living room.
