Yes, inefficient. Last time I tried to get an appointment with an NHS doctor, they gave me one the following week during working hours. Instead, I paid £85 for a private doctor and was in and out of there with antibiotics in 5 minutes.
Hope you paid free market price for the antibiotics rather than the NHS subsidised price of a prescription.
NHS don't subsidise prescriptions unless you're over 60, have a disability, on benefits etc.
