• Hi all...long-time lurker, first-ish time poster here. Also down for the TCR this year.

So my Garmin finally and actually crapped out on me the other day. Complete death. While annoying, it's forced open an opportunity to explore devices that would be good for TCR-esque endurance cycling. I've seen navigation mentioned a few times in this thread, but thought it would be really valuable to hear from folks --- particularly those who have done a lot this kinda thing before --- specifically about good setups.

My own two cents right now... I wasn't massively impressed by the Garmin Edge (1000) that's just passed away. Touchscreen a bit annoying on-the-go; not good with rain / sweat; screen a bit hard to see at times; battery life a bit meh. Had it not died, I would still probably be using it for TCR, but now it's gone I've been looking at the Wahoos, either Element or Element Bolt. Battery life looks alright; they seem quite straightforward and easy to use. Potentially some concerns about how effectively they navigate relative to Garmins, but not sure how much of an issue that would really be. Then for pure functionality, also thinking about the Extrex...

I don't really know at the moment. But would love views, if they're out there.

  • I commented before that One potential issue with the wahoo is that you can't do new routes on the fly if you don't have a data connection on your phone/WiFi.

  • If you do get an extrex make sure you have a cord to attach it to the handlebars in addition to the Etrex mount as they have a tendency to launch themselves from the handlebars when you hit a bump.

  • Which Garmin is it?

EDIT: 1000. What's wrong with it?
