I've got diaries and some phone photos of most of the trip, but all my film (along with the camera I shot it on) went missing in transit. I could upload a few (very average) phone pictures and a brief write up, if there's interest, next time I'm near Wi-Fi.

SPD Trainers : Soles from an old pair of Sidis, hacked into a nice orange pair of converse. Should look dope on my purple fixediefixbike.

That looks quite recessed in to the sole - is it ok clipping in and out?
Always wanted to try that on an old pair of Vision shoes ive got lying around. Need to hurry up an knacker my SPD shoes first though! -

It's easier than I thought it would be. Only slightly more difficult than the Sidi's were.
Not had much of a test yet, will hopefully find time for a decent spin this evening and will report back.

Walking in them is great. You would have no idea the hole is there. Not looking forward to my first puddle...
They are a bit tight as the extra thickness in the sole pushes the foot up. Not a problem in this shoe but I would bear it in mind if attempting it yourself.

Whats airport security like with those things? I imagine it would cause a few issues a a lot of WTF
-
• #460
I wonder if you could get them a bit more watertight with some liberal use of a glue gun or that shoe goo stuff?

mashton steals all the fashion trends. Fashion might soon have to be renamed mashion.

How is the SIDI retained in the trainer? Did you glue it to the trainer's inner sole?
-
• #463
Glad you asked.
The Sidi sole is firmly held in place by the weight of one half of a mashton pressing down on each one. Said mashton is kept in place, in turn, by the top of the shoe and the whole things is lashed together with shoe laces. The laces are generally secured in a double bow, to keep their pesky tips out of my drive train.
Shoe goo fixative and sealant is being explored and estimated for inclusion in the next sprint.

Airport security probably bad.
I recently had to go through similar security at the supreme court whilst wearing the Sidi's. The security guard remarked that there was no need to remove shoes. He changed his tune pretty quickly when presented with the speedplay frog cleats.

What about when you twist to clip out? Presumably you're lifting your foot when you do this in which case there's nothing like half a mashton on the soles.
-
• #466
Ah, I see your point. I ride speedplay frogs. Much less torque needed to rotate out than with SPDs or road cleats.

Security guards get really touchy when I wheel up and ask "where can I leave my Shiv?"
-
• #468
I see. Never used those before. I was imagining my setup and I could see lots of twisting and not much unclipping.

I did this a while back https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/134357/?offset=950#comment10150444 Stuck the inner soles in with contact adhesive which seems solid.

Also, the entire sole of the Sidi's are in the trainer. They can't be rotating nowhere. I was originally going to cut out part of the sole as a plate, but this was easier and now I have a reason for it too.

All things considered, it's a bit of a mash-up.

Nobody liked my hacked FR-01'S a couple of pages back! Sniff :(

Maybe it's the duvet causing offence?

presumably makes them a lot stiffer too, rather than having all those watts squidge away through the converse sole
Retention hack?
