Getting more and more attached to this thing. Reluctant to turn it into the TT bike I've bought all the bits for too.
Any ideas for a fork which wouldn't change geo too much, be as straight as possible, but maybe fit up to 28c + guard for next winter?

Nice bike. You could use 65ob wheels with a Tektro 559 brake.
34mm tyres! ... and your fork would remain straight.
-
• #3904
Thanks! I doubt the alpina has the room for 34c though? Also more expensive than a new fork probably.
I did consider RANDOlan with 650b for a short amount of time when it had a cross disk fork but shelved it. -
• #3905
If the fork takes a 700c 28mm tyre then a 650b 34mm is a fairly safe bet i’d say. Adding guards would take some fiddling (as usual).
I vote for 700 rear, 650 front ;-)

• #3906
It doesn't unfortunately, 25 max in the front
-
• #3907
Ok, that'd suggest only 32mm 650b tyres would fit, of which there isn't much choice.

Hard to photograph, but I've painted my FXE with purple metallic flake paint :D
It needs a more exciting chainset I think though. I have a DA 9000 somewhere I'm going to try, hopefully the chain line will be ok to use it.Details...

Good job! Needs decals and rid of those bottlecage bolts
-

Anyone interested in a 54cm black pre cursa? Everything bar wheels and pedals
-
• #3911
Well the bottle cage bolts are there to add a bit of colour (hard to see but they're green), at some point I'm fitting a green bottle cage. Was out over the weekend, but really not getting on with the hoods of these levers (SRAM S900), probably going to put my old Tekro 340's back on.
What decals should I add, shame you can't get Dolan ones in fluoro green to go with the cables!
-
• #3912
You could always get some made...
I think something more understated like a satin silver or black. The colour is loud enough without going overboard with the green -
• #3913
@alialias the solution is simple... Buy another identical frame, haaa :-)
@Richard1982 paint is rad, but I agree with Al on the satin silver decals. What paint did you use?
-
• #3914
Well the saddle bag I have on is lime, looks good with the purple I think. Changed the chainset to DA 9000 now to match the brakes. I thinking I'm going to put "Dolan" on the downtube, then just my name on the toptube near the seat post. I could be persuaded to go for black, certainly it's between lime, black and silver. I need to find someone making decals I guess!
I actually painted two FXE's, the other has all gold stuff on it :P It's metallic purple then a few layers of lacquer with purple flake in. The fork is an old Easton one, the other FXE is just standard. Just painting up my track bike (pre cursa) using some of that colour changing metallic paint. Then I'm going to add my name along the downtube in either Black or Silver. I've painted the bars (scattos) gloss black.

Here's mine in current form. Low (60 inch) gearing as used on hilly fire roads (gravel) and easy single track. Only problem I have with these frames is lower headset bearing gets a lot of water and dirt in it when used off road so go through bearings.
-
• #3917
Nice, I bet that's a laugh off road. Longer chain and you'd easily fit a 32 in the back.
@rodman I wouldn't fancy one of those pedals whipping around and hitting me in the back of the legs - no foot retention?

Is that chainring in the inner or outer position on the crank and how's the chainline?
Doing some experimenting myself with a 105 FC-5600 road crank (and USE track chainring) but interested because fitting a 39t for HCs. -
• #3919
So I swapped to a road crank and I used a 'Wolf Tooth' chainring. It's offset so as to reduce the chainline. With FC-9000 it gives a chain line of 47.5mm (normally it's ~51mm for the outer ring) which is perfect for me as the WI freewheel is also 47.5mm. If you went down that road I guess 47.5mm would be close enough to work with a standard (~42mm) fixed chain line?
-
• #3920
Wow! I thought the outer ring on a Shimano double is meant to be at 46mm and the inner 41mm (well, the older 5-arm ones...) Your evidence suggests current 4-arm ones are different: needless to say I'll be avoiding that combo ;-) I can't tell from @.kerley's photo if ring is in outer (better looks) or inner (better chainline) position.

Setup on Pursuit Champion no.3 before road crank experiment. Will prob sell SG75 if all goes well.

Go for converted front disc hubs as rear, adjustable chainline(with spacers or dishing)and no fear of stripped cogs
-
• #3923
Yea been using a converted Deore M525 as a rear for a while on my Pomp, going to rebuild that hub (and a front M510) onto a pair of Kinlin ADHNs this weekend for use as the above bike's winter/beater wheels.
EDIT: above wheels are Novatec bolt-on track hubs on DT R460/R460DB with alloy nips. They're fine but a little bit nice for use in really foul weather. -

Cut off a bit of inner tube and pull it onto the headset, should act like a sealant.

I reckon this could be a shout:
https://www.condorcycles.com/products/pioggia-disc-forkPlenty light, maybe 28 + guards would be a push but maybe 25s. Not straight but you can't have it all.
Had an info email from Dolan.
Don't know if this is old news or new news.
