I honestly don't know anything about speedmasters (except the 70's MK ii, which is a whole different watch). But as a buyer you're pretty well protected on ebay as long as you use paypal, so probably take a punt on the next one...
Just my opinion but I would hold out for one with papers myself if possible, this isn't unreasonable for a 15 year old watch...
