  • So where are we in the Macbook Pro release schedule? Are we expecting huge ramp ups in power etc soon? I need to get something ASAP...

Will be getting a discounted machine through a friend, what processor will I be OK with? I don't particularly wanna bang out ~AU$4000 when I could spend a bit less... Was thinking 13" but 15" has much more grunt... Thoughts?

Used for Creative Cloud, a little bit of video as well as design stuff, lots of Logic X... Gonna be plugged into a Thunderbolt display when it's at home...

  • Does anyone know of anywhere which will do you a deal if you buy an iphone and ipad together? Both my current models feel like they could do with an upgrade - I'd usually look a refurbished models but if I can a deal on new ones, so much the better

  • They aint gonna do anything major with them for a few years, I imagine.

Current ones were fairly recently updated and are the 2nd revision of the new form factor. Some people have issues with the new keyboard, so a revised one will likely have new buttons. Power-wise, get the most oomph you can reasonably afford.

  • Said it up thread but we have a few 13 inch absolute base spec machines from 2012/3 and they more than hold their own for even fairly complex editing tasks. Only faff is screen real estate but if you're plugging into a display then that's no bother. The new 15inch models are dead fancy but sound like overkill. That said, if you're trying to keep yourself future proofed for 5+ years like your last model then maybe it's worth the big spend now. Or half cash and half credit or something?

  • I need to buy a new laptop for work and am looking at the MacBook Pro, 13". It's £1749 in the Apple store and I was wondering where people tend to buy from. Is there much movement in price if you shop around?

  • Check Apple refurb and price comparison sites. There's usually a few 100 to be saved if you have a look around. I think John Lewis will give you a 3 year warranty or something for free as well?

  • Yeah, John Lewis seems a popular one for the warranty. And that people often have vouchers floating around. But I've honestly never seen the price fluctuate that much unless you're not fussy about what you get.

http://www.jigsaw24.com/ often have some good deals on open box or refurb stuff but it's obviously dependant on not being that bothered about the configuration.

  • Nice one. Ta

  • Thanks for the tips, guys... 13" seems sensible but i7 quad core is whispering in my ear... Will have to see how much discount I can get off matey... I got 30% off my display when I arrived here so anything similar will push me towards fifteen inches of mega power, even tho' a 13" would be more manageable day to day...

  • If you know anyone who’s a teacher etc. then you can buy through the education routes quite easily. All legit, I just had to give sister in laws name (not address though) for billing, and email her school ID to the Apple Education folks. I bought over the phone with Apple direct.

  • I was thinking about this, but as it's a work purchase I wonder if that would make a difference. I'll investigate. Cheers

  • If you know someone who can get edu discount, it's 10% flat for computers now and I think about 4% for iPads... just go to an Apple store and get them to flash their staff / student card, easiest and saftest way if you are worried that Apple will catch you out.

And by the way, edu discount means anyone who works at a school or university, it doesn't have to be teacher, it can be admins, cleaners, facility staff, absolutely anyone as long as they have a proper staff card with their school / university logo on...

  • Before and after battery replacement in a 6s. It’s noticeable.

  • Does a portable egpu setup exist? Something I could stick a decent Nvidia card in and fit in a backpack

  • Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Puck maybe. Although its either an AMD RX 560 or 570.

  • Need to be using NVIDIA cards for CUDA. I'm switching over to GPU rendering and thinking of future setups for a semi portable system. Going to give those Remote Desktop programmes a try first to see if using my home desktop remotely could work

  • Yes. Zotac mini one.

  • Or node lite if 1050ti is enough. Zotac is prob best solution though.

  • Nice one, cheers. Now I just need to save up for a new MacBook..

  • I am asked to fill both a iPhone 4s and a 5 with new life - put new batteries in them.
Read through reviews / ratings of some on eBay and amazon, and am unsure what to buy now.

Is there some sort of consensus in this thread about which work well / are good value for money?

    Thanks!

  • I've done it with a 4s, and swapped a screen, pretty straight forward. Finding a reputable seller is a mess though, think I got my bits from amazon. Find a product with high rating and hope for the best?

  • Yea that was my strategy so far

  • Very very impressed with newly announced iPad.

    Especially with the price.

Good news for me are that my boyfriend is going for a business trip to New York and it work out to around £235 which is quite a bargain.

  • A bit hyped about it as I haven’t owned iPad for pretty long time and always wanted pencil support but couldn’t justify buying Pro version.

  • Really? I was underwhelmed, its the same price but with pencil support and thats about it? £235 is a good price though, I just miss the Mini's when they were around that.
