Yup stir it to level it. Can break up 'boulders' too although unsure how important that is as tamp then makes it one big boulder puck.
Matt Perger / Barista Hustle has written some good thoughts around all this which pointed back to combined horizontal & vertical tapping as being effective enough at the point I tuned out. (I still stir though #rebelwithoutaclue)
Stirring is knowm. As the Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) and is very effective at removing the boulders caused by static build up ( we think). Another way of doing this is to dose into a metal or plastic pot, and then pour into the portafilter, has a similar effect and is a lot cleaner.
