  • ffs another injury, probably all that swimming. hoping for a swift recovery mate. #protectKLatallcosts

  • Yeah, got 2 marathons this weekend as well - how many ibuprofen constitutes a just-below-fatal dose?

  • Yeah, got 2 marathons this weekend as well - how many ibuprofen constitutes a just-below-fatal dose?

    Ibuprofen: ORAL (LD50): Acute: 636 mg/kg [Rat]. 740 mg/kg [Mouse]. 495 mg/kg [Guinea pig]

    29.7g (148 x 200mg) for a 60kg Guinea Pig, 44.400kg (222 x 200mg) for a 60kg Mouse

Are you more Guinea Pig or more Mouse?

Those would be doses for a 50% chance of dying (or 50% chance of living if your glass is measured that way).

I wouldn't take more than it says on the back of the packet.

  • That's a bit science-y for me. But if those are for a 50% chance of dying, and I do it twice, that levels out at a 100% chance of dying. Looks like anything under 100 tablets should be pretty safe though - now just need to visit Tesco pharmacy 15 times to stock up.

  • 3 weeks countdown till the Manc marathon for me. Last big runs coming up at the weekend, and woke up this morning with sniffles. Blaming the little'un and his nursery fiends. Question is to rest up, or to do the tempo 13 miler this evening as planned..?

Managed the same session home after work last week in 1hr26, carrying a bag and suffering a little in the last few hilly miles north of the A406. Felt ok, with Strava estimating a GAP of 6.26/mi. Always a little dubious of Strava's over-compensation for elevation though, so would estimate more like a 6.30/mi. Not too bad in itself, but also not quite fast enough for the T2 = T1 x (D2/D1)^1.15 (per https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/the-running-blog/2017/mar/28/the-formula-for-marathon-success).

Aiming to go sub-3 on the day, so hoping that a decent 2 week taper, flat course, and race-day vibes can get me round. Wish me luck!

  • @kl ibuprofen? You'll be wearing a LS merino top next #snowflake

  • If I could manage 13 miles at anything inside target MP during training, in less than ideal conditions, I'd say that in itself would be an encouraging predictor that target is on. As for running when not 100% well, if it is just sniffles I'd head out and see how it feels but cut yourself some slack if it's hard work to run at pace. On the other hand, any gunk below the throat is a no-no, best to rest up.

I justified a double flapjack mini-carb load yesterday, in anticipation of this evening's run which will most likely be my biggest MP session of the campaign, about 18 miles total with just under 14 @ MP. At least the snow's gone.

@kl - Tough luck. I know some good runners who have come back stronger and faster after a stress fracture but still a royal pain.

  • At least I didn't take the crutches they offered me. And I think I may be able to get my paws on some tramadol...

  • My right knee (hit by a car a few years ago) has been giving me a small bit of grief.

Nothing major, but I would rather get it checked out before it gets any worse.

Can anyone recommend ... what I should do next?

  • I've been following this thread for a while now, and using the advice that has been shared to see some real improvements in my running, so thanks for sharing experience! However i managed to do myself an injury last friday at the end of a long interval session. I've been trawling run forums and not managed to find anything that resembles what i have done, so hoped i could get an answer here before spending money to speak to someone

Near the end of the session, the outside of my left foot developed an intense pain every step. since then anytime i walk any distance the pain comes back quite fast. doesn't hurt sitting down, doesn't hurt walking on my tip toes, only the action of heel to toe. always the lower outside of the foot in pain. And the pain is strong enough i cant continue walking without limping.

Any ideas? As i am not very clever i didn't stop when it started to hurt and didn't ice it afterwards.

  • how many ibuprofen constitutes a just-below-fatal dose?

The simplest way to find out is keep taking them until you die, then the answer is one less than that. I'd go with tramadol in a more reasonable amount and trying not to die even once though.

  • 16 mile local trail race in the snow this morning.

Very modest dude, you smashed that course to bits.

How do you find out about local races, particularly trail/off-road stuff, I've tried various websites (TRA etc) but none seem very comprehensive?

  • So I attempted this tonight. Did 10, 10, 5, 5 off 2 minutes and it was pretty tough. It also definitely wasn't at 5k pace.

  • Hah thanks, I had a good one, couldn't quite defend my title though!

Mostly word of mouth to be honest, my club also has quite a comprehensive calendar on the website of local events. http://www.tringrunningclub.org.uk/calendar/

  • Still one hell of an effort given the conditions.

Thanks for the link, just what I was looking for. When the summer comes and I’m a bit more confident in my running I might drop in to your club and see what it’s all about.

  • Managed my biggest training session to date last night, 18 miles total, including 4x (1k @ 95%MP, 5.6k @ MP) = 16.2 miles @ 5:45/m. So just under 14 miles inside target MP. Biggest achievement was completing the second half of the session on my own as my training partner (pb 2:27) drifted off ahead, and overcoming the demons telling me to give up on the last lap. Not forgetting the routine 16 mile round trip on the bike to get to Battersea. There's still some hard training to get done between now and the taper but I'm very pleased to bank that one.

  • Sounds good, let me know if you do and I'll make sure I'm about that evening.

@PhilPub that sounds tough. Well done!

  • So, Ennerdale is 12 weeks away. I am slightly shitting it, but that's got me putting the miles in again. Couple weeks at 20 miles then going to need to push to 30+ mile weeks I imagine.

There's a 15 mile fell race on Sunday (Heptonstall brought forward a week after snow cancellation), guess it's time to jump back in proper!

My question for you lot, what kind of milage would you expect per week to train for a 23 mile/7500' 37km/2280m fell race? Is 30 miles a week enough?

I've basically started to shit it slightly, as a month after Ennderdale, I'm doing Wasdale, which is steeper (9000ft over 22 miles), and I was kindly informed by a friend that the woman who came 3rd in the FRA Championship said she almost missed the cut offs when she ran it :-/

  • Assuming Complete not Compete? I wouldn't look at mileage too much, just get a solid 'time on feet' run each week building towards the time you expect to take, then shorter sessions as normal around this. Get lots of hills into these sessions too, low intensity but get used to going up & down. Same for off road element.

That said 30 miles a week is enough for a 'completer' plan for a Mara, so could be a useful measure for these races too.

Heptonstall will be a good marker for you, edit: 12 weeks is a good block of prep left too.

  • Really good account of what actually happened around the HM55 at the weekend:

    http://ajc-runninglate.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/2018-hardmoors-55-one-runners-view.html?m=1

  • Sounds pretty brutal. Good effort. You are doing Battersea on Saturday aren't you?

@nefarious, they sound like pretty tough races. Good luck with the training.

I hit 10,000 logged miles on strava today. a key moment in my life.

  • Hurrah! Nice milestone.

Yeah, I'm up for Battersea on Saturday. Will do some relatively moderate mile reps tomorrow and very easy run Friday, so should be able to give it a decent crack. Should have a decent club turn-out I think.

  • If you or anyone you run with has type 1 diabetes there's an offer of free place at the Lakes in a Day ultra:

    http://www.lakesinaday.co.uk/type1.php

  • Absolutely complete not compete. Last year I looked to come in the front half of the races I entered - top 1/3 or 1/4 was a good day out.

That's a good point about about 30 mile week for a mara completer, so hopefully if I can do the same on the fell, with comparable ascent, I should be alright. I'm trying to avoid too many road miles anyway as it, I find them pretty hard on my body!

I guess I'll have to see how Heptonstall goes and plan accordingly! Thanks for the advice, I feel like I'm heading into the unknown a bit here.
