  • Excellent, thanks. Looks like I need some 280mm spokes for a 3x pattern, which at least ties in with one of the other rather more reasoned calculations I've found on the net.

What did you use to generate the picture of the lacing pattern? Looks like a handy tool to visualise lacing patterns, something I'm not particularly good at on an abstract level.

  • isnt the al33 rim drilled with zigzag offset left and right for 12 spokes each side, or do you have a special triplet drilled rim?

Special triplet-drilled rim. Drilled in a 2-1 pattern.

  • I have a template made in illustrator for testing spoke patterns, so it is one step above drawing on paper :)

  • Ah, handy. I'll have to stick to pen and paper, I think. Or crayons.

  • lukas version:

    x3.166666 @ 32 spokes

Cheeky request - what would the notional crossing figure be for a 2x lacing pattern on the DS? I'd just like to cross-check that figure against the length of the spokes I actually have, to make sure I don't make the same mistake twice...

  • x2.166666

    edit:
but cx-ray/laser spokes will result in low-ish torque stiffness

  • Any tips on calculating the proper spoke lengths on a 16:8 triplet wheel?

Fusion360 is free to businesses turning over <$100k, that probably applies to you unless you're spending a lot more time on your lathe than we know about :)

Yep, that's one reason why I thought, if I have to get new spokes anyone, that I'd get ones long enough for a 3x lacing rather than 2x. And just to be extra sure it can withstand my Mighty Power I'm using CX-Sprints rather than CX-Rays.

  • x2.166666

Thanks. That gives a DS length of 269.3mm, rather longer than the 266mm spokes I've got.

  • If I wanted to model it in 3D CAD then I'd fire up my old copy of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 2.0 and use that. And do some FEA studies just for the hell of it too. Seems overkill for drawing lacing patterns though.

  • Seems overkill for drawing lacing patterns

It's as quick as any other computer method, and quicker than crayons.

  • My rear hub is Shimano deore m535 centerlock.
I need to replace the axle etc, normally I'd buy another hub exactly the same and swap all the innards, but I can't find one anywhere. Is there another hub that's interchangable?

  • @PhilDAS Hope RS4. don't know if they're any good but it fits the bill, CL, 12*142 etc.
I'm looking for the same and the Bitex BX seems the best value so far, Spacycles have them for £81 I think.

  • Only wants to ship to Greece.
Are there newer hubs with the same insides?

You can go through the EVs and check, but nothing leapt out at me as a true fit. 535 is very old. You could probably cobble something together with 525 parts. The 535 freehub is readily available but by the time you've bought that and an axle and cones, you have to wonder whether it's worth trying to resurrect a 15 year old low-end hub.

Are there any Greek LFGSSers who could help?

  • Hello again, last time I'll hassle you all!
Rose bikes have DT R460 for £22.40 which I plan to lace to 32h CK R45 3x - spokes wise I am going with black DT Comps... (is this a good pairing? they are do it all wheels with posh hubs)
Can someone check my working before I buy - I make it 288/290 rear and 292mm front, is this correct?
    Cheers in advance,
    Matt

  • OK, thanks.
I'll have a look for something newer with similar flange dimensions so I can reuse the spokes (wheel was rebuilt last year and barely ridden).

  • There is a j-bend version too.

  • Picked up some cheap rims to replace a set of tubulars. New rims are deeper, so 2 cross and 3 cross both leave the spokes too long. 4 cross is impossible with 32h right? I tried and the final set of spokes was misaligned. Any other lacing options for too-long spokes before I bin these and get a proper set of shallow rims?
