  • Yup!

  • Thinking about heading up on Saturday, and have a couple of questions:

    1. Is the whole area still underwater or not
    2. With heavy rain forecast on Friday morning, what condition would roads typically be in by Saturday? Lots of water hanging around or could clear? Massive puncturefest?
  • Whereabouts? Most places will be fine, the roads tend to drain really quickly. I don't think it's
been flooded of late, that's mainly Cumbria

  • Peak District was never really underwater. That was the Lakes and the Dales. Any heavy rain in winter can cause a bit of localised flooding but not enough to stop you getting a decent ride in.

The main issue is the recent snow and freezing mornings. Its cause a bit of road damage so be mindful of potholes, particularly on fast sections. As ever in winter, it'll be prudent to stick to some of the more main roads as lanes tend to get pretty filthy.

  • Merci

  • Might be worth checking the Derbyshire website for closures though as I think they've got some maintenance planned. Which bit were you thinking of heading to?

  • Was thinking Matlock and a loop from there, but will investigate the site.

  • Managed a grand total of 40miles today. Was great, but I'd forgotten a) two bottles, and b) that it was quite so hilly.
Really ran out of water early on, so had a bit of a miseryfest. But in the best way possible. Just wasn't how I'd hoped to say goodbye to being such a short distance away from the most beautiful riding anywhere.

In retrospect the 53/39 /11-25 made it slightly more of s challenge.

  • 3rd overall on Snakes Pass though so not all bad.
Plus re-discovered Peaslows. And what a 26% gradient feels like.

  • Doesn't that mean you should be turning pro?

  • Ha. No, I suspect it's a case of selective segments as only 3500 people have apparently ridden it.

Also I cheated as I started @ bamford- after warming up on that road between Hathersage and winnats for a bit.

  • Hah, i was just teasing. I don't use strava very often but seen folk like Simon Yates only making top 5 on some climbs in the peak!

Edit: I say "folk like" Simon Yates, but maybe his is the only name I recognised, but pretty sure he wasn't on top on the climbs I looked at.

  • Breaking my Peak District duck this weekend. Planning on a loop south from Hope on Saturday, and a shorter loop up and over Edale on Sunday.

One thing clear from route planning is that it's a LOT more climbing than I'm used to.

Any locals out and about this weekend?

  • don't forget your gloves.

  • Cross threading as this is technically touring stuff. I will be riding the below over Easter with my better half, and wanted to pick your brain on the planned route. We won't be doing massive stages, aiming to split the route in 3days, Matlock to Monyash, Monyash to Castleton and then from there to York (this is the part of the route I am least sold on) where we'll be spending Easter Monday. Any tip is very appreciated.

  • Thinking of spending a weekend in the Peaks Districts Nationals Parks

Doing these two Perms to get a look around on bikes:

    http://www.delphcyclist.info/WhitePerm.html

Other than Bakewells for puddings and any breweries I can find, is there anything else to conquer? Probably going to stay in Marple because it makes the ride starts easier but could stay inside the Peaks Districts Nationals Parks areas* to make it prettier.

  • Those perms look like a good summary of riding in the Peak. The only biggy they seem to miss is Winnat's Pass, as the Dark Peak route takes you up Mam Tor via Mam Nick from Edale. If you can spare the time, you could roll down into Castelton for a cake stop, then back up Winnat's to rejoin the route.

  • ^^ also misses Snake Pass, Cat n Fiddle, Goyt Valley all worth a 3rd day & some more route planning to fit in.

  • I live in Whaley Bridge. Hit me up when you’re in the area if you want someone to ride with.

  • I'm taking the missus and she only has a road bike.

Oh and I fucking hate mud. :)

  • I've never seen the attraction of riding the Snake Pass, apart from when it's closed to motor vehicles.

  • It's fairly quiet most days, what traffic there is moves slowly as it queues up behind the slowest vehicle. Fairly empty at weekends. More so that the C&F.
