  • "They're" is the clumsy workaround

    ftfy

    ftfy

  • change it's where necessary

    ftfy

  • draught

    You're not helping yourself here.

  • Shrug. I find generic use of he/his incredibly clumsy and jarring, and singular they/their not at all. I don't really see the relevance for colloquial language to "buy into" rules about legal language, and besides in this instance I was of course pointing out that "his" is incorrect for me as an individual. If not meant generically, I think it's good to remind people of their own assumptions. If meant generically (I mean - pedantry aside do you actually do that in a normal conversation?) I'm still in favour of shifting away from its use.

  • You're not helping yourself

I'm not ready to concede the division of meanings between draught and draft yet, it's not even 300 years old and I'm waiting to see how it plays out.

  • I think it's good to remind people of their own assumptions

You're assuming that people using masculine pronouns are making assumptions.

I was of course pointing out that "his" is incorrect for me as an individual

You're making public a thing which was hitherto private. That is for you. It would not be acceptable for somebody who knew you privately to presume to reveal your gender by using feminine pronouns on here if they were not already certain that you wanted that information shared publicly, just as it is not acceptable for people who know your real name to address you by it in place of your user name.

  • You know, I'm getting the distinct feeling that even you were pulling one's leg with

"Their" is the clumsy workaround used by people who don't buy into the Interpretation Act 1850 and its successor legislation, but who are happy to use plural pronouns to describe singular individuals.

  • You're assuming

You're quoting selectively. I said "If not meant generically, I think it's good to remind people of their own assumptions."

You're making public a thing which was hitherto private. That is for you.

Um, yes. It is for me, and I did it.

It would not be acceptable for somebody who knew you privately to presume to reveal your gender by using feminine pronouns on here if they were not already certain that you wanted that information shared publicly, just as it is not acceptable for people who know your real name to address you by it in place of your user name.

    No argument from me there.

Out of interest, do you use "he/his" generically in day-to-day conversation?

  • do you use "he/his" generically in day-to-day conversation?

Yes, when the subject is not of an identified gender. In practice, that is usually limited to discussion of Everyman, or of a holder of a position or office. Each time somebody says "An Englishman's home is his castle", he is doing the same, unless he is a complete knob who doesn't think women should be able to own property.

  • Monzo or Metro Bank?

Can't hold foreign currencies but no charges for using the card overseas.

  • We are straying from the point. How was the soup? Did you embellish it, or just drink it as it came? I usually aim for croutons at least, to hold on to the pretence that I'm not a complete savage :)

  • Something like a Travelex Travel Money Card.
    https://www.travelex.co.uk/travel-money-card/
Preload currency onto it, use as a debit card abroad.
Obviously you'll be paying FX fees when you load it, and only use it when it is cheaper than using a zero FX fee sterling debit card, e.g. Monzo

  • `Travelex's rates can be pretty shitty

  • I'm not a complete monster, I wouldn't go around shoving Englishpersons into accepted phrases... And yes, it still jars even if I am slow to pick things up :)

The soup was as good as can be expected for tinned oxtail soup. I had most of it as it came, then used the last little bit as gravy on a jacket potato.

  • apologies for any gender based assumption offences I may have caused - i'm only human - oops I mean hutheir.

  • Airport rates are, but checked GBP-EUR today, and same as PO or M&S etc.
Admittedly all about 1.4% worse than getting a bundle of cash from a specialist FX place.
But the scenario is specifically buying currency ahead of time spendable via debit card, as a hedge against falling sterling. Which I am also interested in, as keeping loads of cash has downsides. Is there a cheaper way of doing it?

  • I'm not a complete monster...gravy on a jacket potato

    Oxymoron :)

  • Oxymoron

    NO its was OXTAIL !

  • Hey, so I'm looking for a road bike after riding fixed for ages. Budget around 500. Saw this, had a ride, really nice frame and wheels (Ribble Columbus SLX, Mavic Open Pro SUP). Would probably change the shifters, big ring, pedals and stem, possibly derailleurs too. Listed at £350, think I could get it down by 50 or 100.

I'm not a fan of aluminium and it seems my budget doesn't stretch to carbon with decent components. Figure an old steel bike like this could be the right choice just for soaking up the miles. Take it or pass?

  • I reckon you could get a substantially better bike than that for the same price.

  • Thought as much. Will keep looking, thanks.

  • Budget around 500...it seems my budget doesn't stretch to carbon with decent components

Boardman Team Carbon 105 or Rival seems to fetch around £400 second hand. If you're looking for something to ride rather than a project, you want to go as modern as possible.

  • Cheers, solid advice, will keep an eye out.

  • I'm build a CX/offroad bike with a 1x groupset, it's got a 38t chainring and I've got some 11speed Shimano 105 levers. I was thinking of putting an 11-36 cassette on, but what derailleur will fit that?

  • Medium cage should do it just about. If you change 10spd SRAM you get get the GX clutch mech for a reasonable price
