Looks like they’re off! Can’t get @veganjoseph to show up on the tracker on my phone but I’ll check on my computer in a bit.

Safe adventures to all. Have a blast and pedal far.

I just assumed it wouldn’t be on their website, with them not organising the race.
Mapprogress is a separate entity, like Trackleaders. It's run by a guy called Shane from NZ, who is the main tracker hirer down under. The site was set up before Jesse pulled the plug, he denies it is anything to do with him!

So they are underway. Joseph nicely placed in 12th, 233km in, just a bit ahead of the other guy on fixed (Pawel).
Stephane is in second, I don't really know / recognise many of the others. There are a lot of nicknames which makes it harder but mostly Aussies. I recognise Rupert Guinness from last year, he's a well known cycling journo out there.
Ryan Flinn (Rhino) is in 4th. Last year, I rode with him for a short while on the first day when we would have been around 15th so there are definitely not the same number of fast guys - but no surprise given the circumstances.
Durianrider DNS'd
Not sure about any others. One guy has gone the wrong way, taken a short cut down the main road...
Last year quite a few of us (incl Rhino) stopped for the night at Southern Cross, so some people might be targeting that. The fast guys: Kristof, Mike, Jesse, etc were a good way past that. But it depends on the wind, last year we had a tailwind - on the first day!

Ha, right! ;)
Probably should have renamed it for sake of it. To Race across australia or something. So it at least wasn't connected in any way.
-
• #1084
I agree, the name of the tracking page should be changed. 'Ride' instead of 'race' or something.
-

Ha, right! ;)
I've said before I'm not convinced (personal opinion) that Jesse did enough to be able to say he had cancelled the race, if things were to come to it. But, I'm not a lawyer, he is no fool and will have taken legal advice on it and he may be right.
Changing 'race' to 'ride' wouldn't make a difference to Jesse as he has said it's nothing to do with him whatever it is called.
I really hope that there are no incidents and that none of this ends up mattering.
I also hope, for Jesse, that he is able to put it on properly next year. He's put loads of work into it and spent a lot of money, and all he's got to show for it is one of the top guys dead on the road and an event he can't put on. He deserves a better outcome than that. -

Abdullah is the glucose guy no? Filmed it last year?
If I remember correctly he’s vegan and from what I collect not massively bike savvy so this might be interesting. Guy in third has a brand new Instagram so no clue on his past of bikes...
-
• #1087
But it’s still not even 1/10th in so none of it really matter yet.
-
• #1088
Abdullah is fast. But not proven over this sort of distance yet. He’s done a few 800km TT’s pretty quick.
-
• #1089
Looks like Abdullah is having an early night at Southern Cross. Stephane is off in the lead, on the long and boring road to Coolgardie!
Good strategy to keep riding if rumour on facebook is correct that they have a tailwind now but it will flip round soon. So much easier to ride on those roads with the wind on your back than in your face!
-
• #1090
Surprised by the amount of riders who have started.
-
• #1091
Then I am clearly in the wrong. I just remember some shoddy maintained equipment mostly.

Could be interesting, first bike shop on route is in Adelaide!
-
• #1093
I'm sure he's taken legal advice as you say and will have done enough legally
And yes it's sad for him, such a good guy. Hope the race can be back on properly next year.
-
• #1094
Abdullah is gunning it. Curious to see if he'll be able to keep that pace.
-
• #1095
Yes, the chat on Facebook is that he's quick but not done much over 800km; first time for everything, maybe he can keep going. If he can't, we know stephane can.
@veganjoseph is almost exactly where I was this time last year. I stopped at Norseman, which is the last town in West Australia, so he should reach there. Depending on how he's feeling, and what the wind is doing, he may push on into the desert or stop there for the night.

Do you mean Harley, aka Durianrider? He was a DNS this time. He is in to bikes though, fixed a spoke on another guy's bike after he'd pulled out and started filming last year.

No, Abdullah is indeed the Glucose Network guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/abdullahzeinab1
He filmed it last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5b9or1rGp8

Abdullah did a 431km first day. 3760m of climbing. Averaging 32km/h.
Vegan Joe - 536km 4,218m @ 25.1 km/h

Stephane seems to be in the lead now, they're both still riding. It's early days so no need to kill themselves for a small lead, but taking advantage of when the winds are favourable is a big factor.
Joe has stopped at Norseman. He'll have a pleasant ride tomorrow to balladonia and beyond.
