Hi all, been struggling with this issue for a while now.
Basically, if I put too much torque down on my road bike, the rear wheel slips out of the dropouts & I come to a stop. Sucks as it happens when I'm usually mashing up a hill. It's already resulted in needing one wheel rebuilt, & I've put my fancy wheels back on so I don't really want it happening again if I can help it.
The way I see it is that there's basically two parts to this. The QR & the frame.
Previously I've used some lightweight titanium QRs, but those kept slipping, I'm currently using a Tacx skewer as that's QR in the flat with the grippiest end bits & it's an enclosed cam one (which Sheldon Brown says gives more of a grip). A few friends have recommended some Hope skewers, which I'll probably try next. I can't see them being much more effective though if I'm honest. All of which I've tightened so tight I've been almost unable to reopen, yet they still slip.
With regard to the frame, I've made sure that the dropout is as clean & free of grease as possible. The dropout is very smooth, is it supposed to be like that? Seems like it'd be hard for a QR to get much purchase on it. It does seem to me that it's not ideally angled though, which seems odd for a frame made by Paul Donohue with obviously a lot of talent (Reynolds 853 with an unusual shaped top-tube though, which suggests that it's a limited run). I don't know a huge about frame building, but a frame builder (Woodrups) is just down the road from me, is it something they could help resolve?
Anyway, I'm a bit stuck really. I love this bike, & as a climber I love mashing it up hills, but with this issue I can never feel entirely comfortable doing that. Anyone got any ideas?
