You have to remember that marble is naturally porous material. Try and keep staining and acid material away. Even water can cause damage if it is left on it as it can dissolve it.
Get it professionally polished and sealed. Then after apply sealed regularly.
Unfortunately cheap marble is plentiful and really poor quality for worktop.
In future granite or one of many manmade composite are more safer options.

My marble kitchen counter top is little more than a year old, and already looks rougher than your mum's hen do.
