• Hi, A few questions, I have a Muddy Fox, from the 90's, nothing amazing, but thinking I want to make it more usable, to carry my little one, etc, First thing to change would be the forks to threadless so where are good 1" stearer forks avalible? Should I just match the measurements of the current forks? secondly what are good 26" tyres and wheel sets?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi. Sounds rad! Fork is a bit tricky, especially if it needs braze ons. Then custom is probs the way to go. Ebay has some good 1" forks with canti and/or disk tabs at aprox 400mm a-c (which i could imagine the current fork is) @bankiren can maybe help.

But yea matching the a-c the bike is designed around is pretty key.

Rose bikes has some solid wheelsets with deore or XT hubs on mavic rims for around 700 - 100 gbp. If not there's lots of retro mtb wheelsets kickin around second hand for cheap.

A slick with good punture protection could be like a Schwalbe Big apple, Big ben, Super moto, or Kojak. Im also really fond of Geax Booze Light 26x2.3

Just an FYI, Pathfinders probably won't clear a 2.3" tyre. This is mine with 2.15" Schwalbe Big Apples:

2.2" and over is pushing it.

  • Thanks, especially for the tire options.

I should probs have a good look at whats on the bike now, as it may be that lighter/slick tire will make the most differnce.

I would like to make the bike sutale for a 45-1 hr commute, which at the moment would feel rather sluggish.

It could be that the gearing in where I should invest first.

    Thanks
