  • Would you like to see a kind of long-term managerial project at Chelsea where a manager becomes an institution, or are you happy with success and rotation?

The former seems like a romantic and outdated idea now in some respects, and Chelsea, Barcelona etc. have shown that instability doesn't necessarily lead to a lack of success.

I think that SAF and first decade Wenger are things of the past. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern and many of the Italian sides change managers frequently. The importance becomes, and what we lack, having a solid infrastructure to develop players despite manegerial changes.

  • I don't know if it's always been the case (my knowledge of football only goes back to when it started in the early 90s), but all of those clubs have/had players who you would identify completely with the club - Lahm, Puyol, Iniesta, Busquets, Terry, Lampard, Ramos, Casillas. Maybe that has superseded the need for long-term managers.

Maybe that is a necessary component too, and could that be what is making this Chelsea team look a bit adrift. I don't know if Lampard or Terry on the coaching staff would quite be the same.

  • It's a bit hard to make out from this article exactly what is happening, and there's a lot about the Italian police that I dont understand at all.

But it looks as though they're now considering Astori's death could have been a manslaughter:

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/mar/05/davide-astori-death-prosecutor-investigates-manslaughter-possibility

  • Fucking hell Nemanja, what a hit

  • No. An autopsy can't be performed unless a manslaughter charge is raised. It is against persons unknown.

  • Looking back to the dark days of the late 70s and early 80s, Chelsea had a team that was, at one stage, entirely home grown. All decent players had to be sold and no one could be bought. We were crap but the players played to the best of their abilities and with the enthusiasm that the supporters had for the club. After Bates came and money improved we bought some players who were identified with other sides: Joey Jones and Mickey Thomas particularly. Those players, call them mercaneries if you will, but relatively cheap mercaneries, played as though Chelsea was in their blood. I will always remember Jones coming on the pitch before games and pumping up the crowd. He remains my favourite player.

I would presonally prefer a team like that who had only a modicum of success (OK, Full Members Cup, Div 2 winners and then up to sixth place in the first season back) than hugely talented players with no soul and lots of trophies. But I don't speak for most supporters.

My point is that players can be motivated to give their all for a club. It is just more difficult these days with intense media scrutiny, punditry, social media, and money.

  • No I don’t think so - I’m pretty sure that is standard procedure for this type of event in Italy.

  • My word PSG have been woeful in these two games. This is a really pretty average Real Madrid team and they’ve not been troubled at all. All that money and this is the level of football.

  • Madrid are having a shocker in the league but this is still the same team that won the champions league back to back and three from the last four.

    They’re anything but average.

  • An average Real Madrid team = not the best, not the worst. Casemiro and Kovacevic in CM and PSG still couldn’t break them down. I think they’re pretty average and I think this PSG team are also pretty average on the shape of tonight’s match.

Spurs beat them 3-1 at home earlier in the competition and they have a much less expensively acquired football team.

  • Maybe I’m being harsh but whenever I watch them this year they just don’t look very good. In the league, copa del Rey or champions league.

Asensio is a wonderful player and produced the two or three moments of real individual excellence tonight.

  • PSG are flat track bullies. If you buy the league in a not very competitive league and win week in week out then you'll get found out in the Champions League.

In other news, I may have to come good on my promise of Fulham season tickets for my daughter (I said we'd get them if they get in to the [sic] #EPL). They're on a hell of a run. Mitrovic was a great loan signing.

  • Agree that they’re not consistent enough but average for Real Madrid = top 4 in Europe. Not going to defend them as I can’t stand the club.
They can win in the CL knockout stages purely from muscle memory.

Jose’s teams used to be able to do the same.

  • Fulham are looking very good. It's going to be extremely squeaky bum at the top of the championship this season.

  • I put money on an all English final after the group stages. Still think all 5 teams will be in the next round.

    Chelsea to win.
    Arsenal win Euopa League
Spurs to finish 4th in the league
Chelsea take Spurs Champions League spot and Arsenal in champions league with the Spids playing Europa Tuesdays. The only thing I have left to hope for now

  • Chelsea to win.

    Arsenal win Euopa League

You put your own money on this?

  • First two not going to happen not with how Chelsea and Arsenal are playing at the moment.

Not sure how Chelsea could be so effective in a negative sense against Barca and then sonabject against Man City. Did they fear City more?

If arsenal get past Milan, which isn’t a given, can’t see them mustering the gumption to get past any of the teams that would be left in the Europa League..

  • efficient job last night by liverpool
patted it round the back 4 for most of the night, saving as much energy for the scum at the weekend,

I only just realised a key tactic to the klopp pressing game last night
obviously a team can't press all night so in between the periods of manic running around, the patting it round the defence tactic is a pretty good way for the front 5/6 to get their breath back before going again
it was visible last night where we did some periods of attacking play followed by the back 5 getting hold of the ball and slowing the game down, I always thought it was jordan hendersons defensive mentality but now see i it's all part of the klopp master plan

  • Back where we belong. Apparently.

  • You boys don't learn, do ya? 😂😂😂

  • 'Boro sneaking into the playoffs with a 1-0.

  • No - that would be a terrible bet! Just saying, wouldn’t it be lols

  • The only certainty is that both the spuds and the bindippers will win sweet Fanny Adams this season... Everything else is up for grabs...

We won't get past Barca, our season's well and truly over... See you in august!!

  • Almost spring here. I can feel it in the air

  • So how many trophies have we won since you’ve stated this mantra of yours?
