There's a bunch of little holes in the platform. You attach the wood by screwing from underneath.
You only need a small amount of screw sticking in the wood, unless it's really soft. Just mark on the side of the wood how far they go in, so you don't ruin the edge of your chisel by accidentally hitting a screw.

I see Axminster have added a couple of newer ones since I got mine. I get on fine with it, but might have got the new clamp-on one, if buying now, as I don't keep the vice permanently attached to my bench anyway.
