28 is fun for street stuff though perhaps 35 preferable 'traditionally', but if you're doing any skylines/buildings etc (where in KL/SGP etc it's largely skyscrapers) you'll want that extra width (though you may notice some distortion) but that's the trade off to be made if you're not able to bring a zoom. On that note, could you rent or borrow one?
I'm not keen on spending more money, and I don't think I'd be comfortable borrowing someone's gear for that length of time and trip.
I feel pretty certain by now, that I'll take the 35.
It was the first lens that I used on my D700 and used it as normal lens for quite a while before I got the 50.
