Back in the day you used a fw cable, now though you can use most cables: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462
If you have your data though, no need to worry about it
Re ^ I've pondered getting an Mac Mini loads of times, but having a laptop to move around is too useful for me. I could potentially get a mini for my home office, but then I'd need to faff with keeping files in synch etc

Haven't tried that, not sure I've got the right cable? And my gf's MBP is in an even sorrier state than mine, she doesn't take care of her nice things... My data is all backed up fine tho', not worried about that...
My big concern is what do I do next? I don't wanna shell out for a maxed out MBP, seriously considering a Hackintosh...
