It even probably works as well as BSA! Thank goodness for progress.
I wonder if they could have done the drop chainstay shiz without using a PF BB.

Has Trek ever recently used anything other than 86/92 BB's?
This is most of what's available UK wise.

Dunno. Probably BSA on their more utility driven models, rite?
Nobody wakes up and says I'm so glad my bike is BB86. Nobody.
At least with the 30mm standards you can use Hollowgrams or weird EBB shiz*. And any crank you like.
I liked the look of this frame - but had a puke on cock moment when I clocked it was 86.
* i get that you don't need that here with them sexy sliders.

True.
Yet also, at least for me from a mechanical point of view, it stops people complaining about 'creaking'. Not that I have anything supremely bad to say about 30mm standard anymore.Saying that, Trek does make up for that lack of OS BB stiffness by making the beefiest BB clusters I've seen on bikes.
*sexy slider image requirement.

Totes forgot I had BB86 on my Emonda. Was also painless on there.

no that was BB90

If anyone wakes up thinking about bottom bracket standards they need to wake up.

So do PF BBs not creak? Is it user error? (I think they're stupid regardless of creaking)
-
• #2886
When everything is right, they are fine*. They rely on the manufacturer getting everything right and the owner using a bit of care if / when they do any maintenance. That's all.
* in the sense that they work and shouldn't make any unwanted noises. Durability may vary.

Sounds pretty shit to me :)
-
• #2888
More likely than not yes, user error or factory installation error.
You say PressFit BB's are stupid, yet most of the worlds industries press bearings in rather then screw them into threads (or push them into cups to be then screwed into threads?!?!). They've been doing it for a long time, and it's been working pretty well so far.

Everybody has been pressing headset bearings in for ages..
-
• #2890
Oh yeah.

I installed a bb30 plastic FSA one. First with wooden blocks and clamps. Not good, bashed it out. Then installed with the right tool but forgot the rear light cable. Bashed it out, reinstalled. Has been quiet since which should be 3000kms plus.
So this is only for the cheap plastic ones, but it works, even when the installation is one big user error. And the bb is not expensive.I would even go as far as saying that its better for maintenance skipping people like me.

I do nearly all my maintenance myself and that's where threaded BBs have an advantage (in terms of availability of tools and ease of installation) - also the idea of bashing a part of your bike with a hammer seems incredibly crude. And, if you saw all the seatpost chat, you might say that I have an unreasonable obsession with replaceability. So they're not for me.
But that wasn't the point; I was just curious about the creaking aspect though

Why do pressfit bbs exist?
Was it to allow access wider shell area (for stiffness) ...... or was it to move weight off the frame spec sheet?
-
• #2894
I guess the forces on a headset aren’t as complex. Cyclist will insist on pedalling (and they don’t even pay road tax).
-
• #2895
Your point seems to be a maintenance related one so I'll comment on that.
They're called pressfit, not bashfit. They're also as replaceable and more commonly available than threaded ones so I'm not really sure what the issue is.Do you own a tool for tightening a BB? Yes? Then someone has the same tool to press bearings in. You can even make your own one!
-
• #2896
Or was it to make production cheaper, skipping the threading
-
• #2897
I might be wrong but I think someone on here had bad experiences with one of those. Something about tyre clearance and cable routing maybe. I think there was a CP
-
• #2898
Plus how often do you replace a headset? I've only ever done one, but I've changed like 10 BBs
-
• #2899
Wasn’t it to allow more tolerance for wonky manufacturing. The plastic cups take up some slack

Cable routing I’m expecting to be bad, just open holes into the frame, not routed so you have to fish out cables at the other end but not the end of the world. Tyre wise, I’d only be putting like 38s on it so no problems there either. The one I’m looking at on eBay comes without fork so I would need a full carbon gravel fork with guard mounts, post mount and 40mm+ clearance
BB86 works great with Ultratorque
