More likely than not yes, user error or factory installation error.
You say PressFit BB's are stupid, yet most of the worlds industries press bearings in rather then screw them into threads (or push them into cups to be then screwed into threads?!?!). They've been doing it for a long time, and it's been working pretty well so far.

I installed a bb30 plastic FSA one. First with wooden blocks and clamps. Not good, bashed it out. Then installed with the right tool but forgot the rear light cable. Bashed it out, reinstalled. Has been quiet since which should be 3000kms plus.
So this is only for the cheap plastic ones, but it works, even when the installation is one big user error. And the bb is not expensive.I would even go as far as saying that its better for maintenance skipping people like me.

Yet also, at least for me from a mechanical point of view, it stops people complaining about 'creaking'. Not that I have anything supremely bad to say about 30mm standard anymore.
Saying that, Trek does make up for that lack of OS BB stiffness by making the beefiest BB clusters I've seen on bikes.
