  • Pretty much any Avid or Shimano V-brake will do, but if you can find them without shelling out too much retrotax, Shimano's parallel-push V-brakes are awesome for giving you nice consistent braking without having to faff with adjusting the pad angle as it wears. Watch out for worn linkages though, can cause noise and vibration and the parts are too small and fiddly to do much about it.

Or get a Pompetamine and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

  • I've got mini-Vs on mine up there^
I gave it to my LBS to fiddle with them to get them to fit though.

  • Must depend on the guard and how it's fitted. I had them too (still using rear Mini V because cantis foul my rack mounting) but couldn't get them to work properly with 42mm SKS Bluemels. They either fit under the cable but with a pointlessly large gap between tyre and guard with mega toe overlap, or appropriate mudguard coverage with severe rubbing of the guard on the cable. Didn't want to flex the guard to make it fit at both ends because I've had too many plastic front mudguards fatigue and fail as result, hence switched to front canti.

  • I'm figthing an urge to fit a small front rack to my V3 (original fork), but don't want to double-up on the front, currently occupied, mudguard mounts, or mount to the axle.
I don't want to buy a new fork, but do own a drill, rivet nut tool, and some stainless M5 rivet nuts.
Does the forum believe there's enough thickness in the legs of the Pomp fork to accommodate rivet nut installation without compromising strength?
Would obvs braze ideally, but CBA with paint removal, expense and faff. Will paint over whatever I do install.
Finally (not normally worried about this, but) would this make the fork more or less desirable/valuable, in light of recent discontinuations...?

  • My Tektro mini Vs foul the mudguard at the front. The metal bit that connects the two arms rubs the top of the guard (45mm Chromoplastics) so when I brake it pushes the guard to the left slightly. Lived with it for 2 years. It'd be easy to fiddle with the fork crown mounting to push the guard about 5mm lower but I CBA.

  • You can double up, don't worry about it

I've been meaning to get some of these for a while, front of my surly is a mess and I need to sort it. Fancy sharing postage?

  • Yeah go on then :-) No idea much it is, but will send you £6 plus 1/2 postage if you order.
Can then re-use rust-free front canti bolts to replace the rusted rear Mini-V ones.

  • can I get in? would need it fwded to berlin though, pwettyplease? pm inbound

  • Do you get enough cable pull for regular Vs with those levers? They’re marketed for ‘road’ brakes and alongside another model meant for Vs.

  • Ask @CharlieCardboard :-)
I used the same ones for a while (Tektro RL340s?) with Mini-Vs and braking was fine. Didn't like the lever reach, blade shape or hood shape though. Currently using Cane Creek SCR-5C with a front canti and rear Mini-V.

  • He’s using mini vs!

  • Sorry guys for interrupting you, but Ive finally (almost) finished my pomp. :)

  • Apologies for spam, selling my small Pomp if anyone is interested!

Was there supposed to be a picture here? Not showing any.

    cough

  • I have the same setup as CharlieCardboard. Basket between 420mm drops, using Tektro levers and a Wald 137 basket.

I am also running Tektro 926AL Mini V brakes over SKS Longboard P45 fenders. If you fit your fenders correctly and do not have enormous tyres the brakes do not foul the fender, and work just fine. See here (please ignore broken rear fender in that photo):

PS I believe we live in the same city.

  • I had my dad make a longer L bracket so that the fender sat closer to the tyres, meaning that there is no contact between the brakes and the fenders, and the fender line is nice and tight!

  • Flared drops such as Salsa Cowbells allow full use of drops with a Wald 137, fwiw

  • Loving riding this at the moment. Had it about 6 months and it keeps getting better and better! Originally had 28mm Paselas on it , which were good, and a Flite 1990 in nubuk which looked lovely but my arse wasn't too impressed. Swopped them out for a Fabric Radius saddle and 32mm Gatorskins, which I wasn't sure about on Halo track wheels, and it feels like a different bike. So much more comfy and enjoyable to ride - maybe it's just my advanced age!

  • Getting there, need to sort out a new, longer stem, fit the caliper for the front disc and then some new bar tape...
