  • So I’m in Scotland with work this week. A colleague and I had to drive down from Aberdeen to Dumbarton yesterday. Left at 12:45 as Aberdeen was being abandoned by the locals. Got completely stuck in the M80 closures and after not moving for hours we’d started to mentally prepare for the night in the car. We’d not eaten since breakfast and were getting low on petrol so we had to resort to turning off the engine, waiting until we got unbareably cold before starting the engine again for some heat.

I’m pleased to say we eventually got clear of the blockages thanks to some surperb driving by my colleague and eventually crept to Dunbarton where he dropped me at Lenny’s lodge at about 9:30 before heading home himself.

The Brewer’s Fayre restaurant was closed (bullet swerved there) so I hiked to the nearest garage for a subway (living the dream) and some water.

I was supposed to be flying back home this evening but my colleagues car was now 1m deep in snow and the roads in Dumbarton were even more lethal than the evening before. So he called me to say there was no way he could get me back to Glasgow airport.

Tried all the taxi companies and most weren’t prepared to drive anywhere or the few that were had no capacity for more bookings.

The inevitable email from EasyJet to say that my flight was cancelled came and the earliest flight I could book was Saturday morning. Sod that, so I looked at thetrainline and it looked like there were trains running. Ace. But on further inspection, no that was clearly BS as no trains were running out of Glasgow. Jumped back on EasyJet’s website. Now the next available flight was Saturday evening. Or £900 for a BA flight.

Seeing as I was stranded in Dumbarton anyway it all seemed a bit immaterial.

Meanwhile my hero colleague has managed to dig out his car and somehow get down the hill he was on to the main roads and was offering to take me to the airport.

He got me there without too much bother (although it took him 6 hours to get the 20 miles back home). I owe that man a beer.

So now I’m stranded at the airport. Booked into a hotel who by luck had a cancellation and my plan is to get a train home tomorrow. Watching BBC Scotland’s 6 o’clock news there’s zero chance of trains running tomorrow so now I’m stuck in Glasgow airport playing Partridge for another 48 hours.

Could be worse, could be stuck on the M80 still with the other.

TL/DR: I’m bored in a hotel with enough time to kill to write long boring posts about the wanky weather so if you’re at home with your loved ones, enjoy.
