I appreciate that it can be used in theory. My concern was that there might be more noise from the drivetrain and possibly quicker chain wear due to there being some extra width in the chain (maybe up to 2mm). Hence I was asking for practical experience running a 3/32 (9 speed) chain on a 11/12 speed chainring.

It's "compatible with", not "specific to": the chainring doesn't care how many gears you're running at the back.
