  • friction shifting :(((((((((

  • Maybe there is a market for @Jaap custom ratchet plates

  • Haha, it took me over an hour to get that extremely small extra tooth in the right shape and on there..

  • But still, it's shockingly easy! I'm surprised SRAM haven't got 12-speed road groupset if that's the only change needed (obviously the freehub body needs to change too).

  • obviously the freehub body needs to change too

No it doesn't, they already have a 12 speed road freehub body called XDR and it's already on the SRAM 900 and Industry Nine CX hubs, notice the 10 speed and 11 speed spacer on the last one.

Also the Apex1 rear derailleur easily has the reach to clear that extra 12th sprocket. I'm guessing SRAM is gonna do the same as me somewhere Q4 2018 and call it "Red1 Eagle" and sell it for huge money. They really just have to replace one part on the current 11 speed shifters.

  • my gf also finds I am a hobby mechanic without much talent seeing that bikes brake down all the time and her omafiets just soldiers on without maintenance.

I know this feeling too well.gif

  • I have just been gazumped by the new thang from way back in 2007 but new to me, some avid juicy hydraulic brake levers that started spilling their juice over me.

To be fair, that's very much an Avid Juicy 'feature'.

  • Sorry I meant that you had to change your 11-speed freehub. Probably could get one of those cassettes with the dinner-plate 12th sprocket that leans out and just barely clears the spokes but fits on an 11-speed freehub body?

Ahh no, the spacing between gears is different on those Eagle 12 speed cassettes. So you can't use those. You really need an 11 speed XD cassette, like the 10-42s of SRAM or 9-32s of 3T. And you add the 12th with an "adapter cog" like, but not limited to, these :

  • Right, cool. How big are you going to go on the back then? 50T or something mad?

  • I've got a 10-42t cassette with a 46t adapter cog on it.

  • I was thinking just get them CNC'd?

  • Nice one☝️ . Did you order the paint already?

  • Still going for that nice green colour? Rattlecan job or what?

  • Last thing on the list before painting, internal cables. Drilled holes and bent some tubing:

    Brazed the tubing in:

    And finished everything off:

@frankenbike Yes, I ordered some cans of RAL E 220-1. I'm gonna use my paint gun :)

  • favourite cp thread

  • I don't want the modifications to end!

  • Am I correct in thinking with alloy you'd be a bit stuffed doing mods like this? I do like steel. Lovely work.

  • So envious

  • alloy

Alloy as in aluminium? Well you have some different options with aluminium, unfortunately my TIG welder isn't capable of running AC so I can't weld aluminium. But there are loads of welders that can.

As far as I know brazing like I did can't be done, but it's a lot easier to glue aluminium parts together as an alternative.

Aluminium does liquify at lower temperatures so casting aluminium parts is a lot easier than steel actually. I have a casting oven and made some Land Rover parts out of aluminium.

Heat treatment is a bit more difficult though.

@swedeee Thanks! Any suggestions for further mods?

  • i'm not the imaginative type tbh. I wouldnt even have come up with the idea of modifying the shifter haha

  • So, would it be possible for you to make a cast and do a run on those ratchets? I'd love me a mod. :)

  • Hmm I'll think about it. I'm not sure it'll work since the original is steel.
