  • Had the same problem. Changed the caliber and its been flawless ever since then. I think the system can be made bulletproof by using any of the mtb calipers.

  • Googling for experiences on hydraulic shimano road calibers there seems to have been many leaking seals on the pistons. That's why I bought Hope calibers. One of them was leaking, I'm waiting for warranty replacement now.

  • Great project!

Always thought these frames with a different paint job would be awesome.

Why go through all the effort of changing the mount system for the brakes? are flat mounts noticeably better?

  • Thanks!

Nahh, it's just future proof. New road disc brakes seem to only come in flat mount.

  • Status on this?

  • I'll upload some more pictures soon. The frame is sandblasted and the flat mounts are welded on.

  • Soon?

  • My bad! Was busy with some other projects.

Change of plans, no more DI2 1x11. Instead I converted my rear hub to 12 speed:

And modded the ratchet ring of SRAM Apex1 rear shifter with a 12th tooth/gear:

    Removed the seatstay bridge:

Brazed on flat mounts, still not sure if I'm gonna remove the post mounts:

Waiting for some higher outside temperatures to spray the colour on:

  • no fucking around with this one. slotting ratchets to get an extra gear.
    areyouawizard.jpg or engineer?

    or both?

  • nice thread - sorry i missed it. glad i caught it.
    subbed.

  • Haha, I was looking at the internals of SRAM shifters. And after days of thinking, is that really it? I decided to just try it. Got the shifter assembled again and it really shifts 12 times now.

I have an engineering degree by the way.

  • thats what that semi circle cog was? you've modded the internal ratchet system of the shifters? lol- next level. well done.

  • Yes! Thanks :)

  • areyouawizard.jpg or engineer

Mysterious guy in trenchcoat judging by the shoes.

    @Jaap awesome stuff.

  • Advanced wizardry.
    Kudos.

  • I love a good mod and this is next level - can't wait to see the finished bike!

  • Awesome. Is it off an MTB shifter? The road ones look a bit bulkier than that. Although I've only looked at the 10-speed ones in any detail.

Edit: oh my stupid brain failed to process "Apex 1"

  • And modded the ratchet ring of SRAM Apex1 rear shifter with a 12th tooth/gear:

    :o

I didn't even know SRAM shifters were rebuildable, let alone hackable.

  • well I am also technically an engineer, a master of SCIENCE (but in architecture, so nah)

I have just been gazumped by the new thang from way back in 2007 but new to me, some avid juicy hydraulic brake levers that started spilling their juice over me.
my gf also finds I am a hobby mechanic without much talent seeing that bikes brake down all the time and her omafiets just soldiers on without maintenance.
I am afraid she has a point there...
anyways, MOAR modding, hoe did you get the twelfth cog to fit on the freehub?

  • Thanks everyone!

@frankenbike It's a road Apex 1 shifter, wasn't sure if this would work so didn't wanna put a lot of money in the shifter. Maybe later I'll upgrade to Force since the ratchet body is the same in both shifters.

@Rodolfo I'm using an XD-body/hub and a XG-1175 cassette is dished a bit more to the outside and it doesn't slide all the way over de splines on the body so there is some room for an extra cog, but just not enough. No I removed some material from the cog so it slides over the end of the XD-body.

In the future I would just use a SRAM 900 or Industry Nine CX hub, they are already 12 speed compatible.

  • Just so I can understand, did you file out an extra tooth or did you braze one on?

  • I TIG welded an extra tooth on.

  • Like a boss..

  • extremely impressive bodging

  • Clever cookie...

But it's all about Shimano 14-speed (due for release very early April)
