Problem was sorted when I rode through a couple of hours ago. No idea how much impact my complaint had.

While waiting a the lights had a driver get out of his car and fling a snowball at me as his passenger filmed it, got threatened with driver going to the boot, took a photo of the car then a bit after got chased along the strand by a driver and passenger(on foot) pushed off bike and punched a few times, bike kicked a few times so have to true a wheel back. Ruined my nice day out at the Tate.

Might walk to work tmrw.
The better option is to leave a note on it saying "is this your bike? I'd like to buy it ". If no one responds after a few months just cut off the lock. If they do either buy it off them - since they clearly don't use it - or say "oh that's too expensive for me" and find a new bike to stick the note on.
Otherwise you might get in trouble if the owner is still around
