Have the day off so took my slacker self to the cinema to see Black Panther.
really enjoyed it, we'll never get truly original stories anymore as they've all mostly been told and this one (heir to the throne is challenged) has been done a million times but the way in which it was done was excellent. the use of certain tropes didn't feel quite so forced/obvious and probably the only things that really got my hackles up was
spoiler
when the guy from attack the block and his soldiers immediately flipped allegiances all because of a half arsed mention of his parents dying and a weird overreaction at not catching the saffa chap immediately upon him becoming king, in spite of his missus literally being on the opposite side as well as all his mates. Obviously it needed to happen or there's no end battle but fuck me they could have made a bit more of an effort with it. also the overly specific explanation of the railways and how they function was a shit way to setup the stage of the final battle especially as apart from purely being a vehicle for making the suits go into lava lamp mode so there could actually be a killing blow it added nothing to the spectacle of the fight so they were just fighting on a railway track basically. -

Blick pnather.
Some great ideas let down by some pretty shonky actering.
Perpetuates notion of Africa being one homogeneous people separated only by the way they dress, which is ironic for a movie that makes a lot of noise about identity.
Good to see john kani still getting acting gigs.

Saw I, Tonya yesterday. Enjoyed a lot. More than my girlfriend surprisingly who was mega pumped for it. Margot Robbie and Allison Janney were both fantastic. Did that annoying thing where the actress/actor talks directly to the viewer and I wasn't a huge fan of that but other than that, really good.
Saw Black Panther on Friday too. Not sure I'd agree with your sentiments @greenhell - it very clearly states that Wakanda is a single nation. It is realistic for there to be multiple tribes who dress differently in a single nation, no? Enjoyed that, also. Particularly liked Stan Lee's cameo.

Ben Hur remake - brought to you by Channel 5 productions, only managed 40mins
jeeez its steaming - and so so cheap - how the studio thought this could ever come anywhere near what it should have been - would have had more respect if they just said "sorry were never going to release it" -

Thing that annoyed the most about BP was the casting of a CIA man as a goodie. In a movie about what it means to be african. In Africa. The CI fucking A.
Also, the fact that any sort of armed struggle is something to be frowned upon in favour of sharing happy fee fees and centrism. In a movie about what it means to be african. Set in Africa.
Fuck that noise.

i sort of wondered how they could possibly justify the idea of a "Wakanda" in our real universe given Africa's struggles - and how its population has been treated all over the globe for centuries ....
edit : sorry browser went mad.....and i get the feeling they didnt come close.

Netflix's Mute - don't bother. Bunch of sub-John Wick, sub-Drive, sub-Enter The Void clichés with a Memento-esque hook cobbled together with no fucking semblance of a compelling narrative.
Although - if you're trying to distract the 10% of your brain that wants distraction while you work on turning an excel spreadsheet into a series of powerpoint slides, then actually it's wonderful. there's nothing there to occupy your attention so much that you mistype a formula. win!
Only decent thing about the recent '...of the Apes' movies was when 4 of them got out of a people carrier in full costume when I was just grabbing lunch off regent street and my brain short circuited itself for about a minute.
the latest one I've tried to watch 4 times now and can't get past the first 30 minutes without deciding there's something better to do.
