B = 1 + (B/2) : then multiply through by 2 2B = 2 + B : then minus B from both sides B = 2 : then multiply by 1.5 or (3/2) 3B/2 = 3 : QED
don't be silly, only one multiplication needed:
B = 1 + (B/2) B - (B/2) = 1 (B/2) = 1 3 * (B/2) = 3
That did occur to me, after posting. I think I instinctively wanted the subtraction to be integral, or something.
It's not like I'm worried about the computational complexity or anything.
