Winter Olympics

One pro about having a newborn is that I was up to watch the gold medal hockey game from period 2 onwards, such a disappointing result though :(

I got sucked in, it was a disappointing finish.

Does anyone know what the blue ribbon event of the winter games is? The summer games have the 100 metres as it showpiece event was wondering the winter event is?

Downhill?

They're pretty much all downhill.

Traditionally it's the alpine Downhill but it really wasn't a big thing this Olympics. Partially because of the lack of enormous rowdy drunk crowd that you get at downhill events in USA and Europe. The excitement just wasn't there.

Have they stopped talking about that speed skater yet? The last time the BBC devoted this much air time to a non-medal-winning Winter Olympian was in the heyday of Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards, but at least he fucked up with a smile on his face.

I've got a fiver on her to win SPOTY this year by just barging all the other competitors out of it.

Also he was launching himself off a massive ramp at very high speed, not skating round in a small circle.

Although speed skating does seem to mainly consist of people falling over and getting disqualified.

The Netherlands got bronze in the women's relay even though they weren't in the main final after 3 of the 5 teams in the final were disqualified.

Given the amount of curling I've now watched, we can safely say i'm a curling expert, and that was a stinking match from GB. Some right cack shots. I'm available as DS for the next Wintypics.

I don’t think you can enter as many as you like. I used to be mates with the Bermudan cross country skier (at the last 3 Olympics) who said that he and representatives of many smaller nations were only able to qualify because of country quotas. He’s a good skier but iirc he barely qualified for US national events and never qualified for a World Cup where there are no quotas and 90% of the field come from the top few countries.

Good to hear a bit of Kool and The Gang after the mens curling final. Shame it was a Celebration for the Swedes rather than the Brits.
