Drops or risers? Id say go sram 10 speed for 1x. Consumables are cheaper and still as widely available as 11 speed, plus it'll probably last a little longer. Gx rear mech will take 36t+ and rival 10 speed shifters go for cheap on ebay. Can also recommend J&L narrow wides from far east ebay sellers. High quality and mine hasnt dropped a chain after a good few hundred rough miles
SO, having previously been in search of a do it all, I've settled on a "does most things" which is much more sensible and suited to my lets say, limited, budget. I love the Pompino I picked up for the winter but I don't wanna potentially bugger it up by trying to fit gears to it.
Really I need something capable of at least 28s and guards to do the daily commute, and for weekends so I don't hold back group rides slogging up hill on the Pre Cursa. Also love the idea of picking up some gravel when I'm visiting the in-laws in Durham.
So, having seen @Pas142 was putting his boardman up for sale I'll be picking it up tomorrow night!
I think the first plan will be to get something rolling as soon as possible, with the emphasis on being able to add bits to it as I can to improve it. In the name of cutting cost and reducing bits that can break, I've decided to go 1x with whatever speed I can get cheapest either 10 or 11.
Oh, and paint. Forks will stay black but the frame I plan on either green or orange spray.bike DIY job.
Bits I'll need:
Hoping I should be able to pick most of this up off here as cheaply as possible. My main area of ignorance is the shifters and mech. Mainly, what second hand bits can I cobble together to give a decent performance? Also not sure on the gearing but the riding I do is all fixed at the moment so anything more varied than that is a win!
I know SRAM is supposed to be fairly cross compatible between the different lines, I just need something that can shift up and down!
Any advice or potential inspiration would be great, as well as any parts people can sort me out with!
