If I was doing it I think I'd head west and get as close to Hereford as I could on day one, then head up through the border country for the next two days.
Obviously it depends on where you're going in Liverpool, but I'd definitely follow @pacef8 's recommendation and head in via the Wirral. I think you can still take bikes on the Mersey ferry, that's a great way to arrive in Liverpool.

i thought 2 direct - but toying with the idea of west and then up through wales - 3 days for that maybe?
